What should we do with fashion? Should we keep it small and artisanal or should we make it available for the mass? How to balance exclusivity with increasing profit for shareholders is tricky. I certainly would not want to be in the shoes of the head of fashion houses or the CEO of a fashion corp.i hope Ms Thomas will write a follow up on how fast fashion, street fashion, and fashion bloggers have influence brands and brand management. Now a days I see more and more cooperation between brands and bloggers/editors. I find that I am influenced by seeing what the fashion bloggers wear and what street fashion photogs capture. I know more about the name of a purse and recognize certain trends this way, much more than fashion mags and editorials.

I read this book a while back and a lot of the things in it are still in my mind. It has changed the way I think and shop. This book will make you think twice about the luxury products you buy. Having just entered the job market and being in need of good quality wardrobe staples this book was right on time. I've learned that some so called luxury products aren't even worth the wrapping they come in. While other products still retain the quality of a hundred years ago. Being a seamstress I already had suspicions about some of the things called luxury nowadays and this book has not only confirmed my suspicions but informed me greatly. One big thing about this book is that it is big on history. Many famous houses' histories are detailed in this book and while you might feel it a little boring at times, I think it contributes very much to the bigger picture. If you are trying to become a more conscientious shopper like myself, also watch the documentary "The True Cost".

Top reviews sum the book up pretty well. It is a very informative history of luxury production, and goes into quite a lot of detail on the formation of the main luxury houses and follows them through their transition into modern growth-focused companies. It also goes into a lot of detail on how international consumers (particularly in Japan, China, India, and Russia) have influenced the industry. The non-trivial amount of typos throughout the text (kindle edition) was a bit annoying, but overall the writing was definitely readable (it is not in academese). I wish that there was a follow-up chapter as it has been about a decade since this was published, so if you are looking for the most up-to-date information, this is probably not your book.

Dana Thomas, writing as a well informed journalist, provides an entertaining expose of the burgeoning luxury market. She provides detailed profiles of the world's most sought after brand names and how they have transformed their industry from made to order to made in China/India/Russia.The book is well written and avoids any technical jargon. The anecotes and first hand research is admirable. She definitely put her time and energy in researching famous luxury houses and provides some interesting commentary on how things are changing.I would highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn about the behind the scenes business of famous luxury brands and the "democratization of luxury."

A must-read if you are: a connoisseur of old school luxury items (artisanal couture type) OR a throwaway fashion type who never saw much difference between the faux and the fine handbag OR the international traveler or culturally curious person who wonders about the definition of luxury as it crosses state boundaries in the global marketplace.... finely researched, well presented in a highly readable style. A truly insider view. I've had a personal boycott against LVMH since reading it a few years ago. highly recommended.

If luxury is available to all - does it cease to be luxury? This is the primary argument of Dana Thomas' fascinating examination of an industry that tends to defy rational consumer behavior (but who said we consumers were ever rational!). She has thoroughly researched the subject and the book is replete with facts and figures embedded in a narrative that reads more like a novel. Given it is written in 2007, there are some statistics or trends that will have been tested by our economic troubles, however, the primary premise and other key facets of the book remain true and relevant. And what overwhelms is the author's curiosity and nose for appropriate detail. It is equal parts history, sociology, and brand and business strategy treatise. Overall, it is a compelling indictment of how the luxury industry has evolved from artisans to staggering brand behemoths presiding over a $157 billion industry (35 brands control 60% of the business). As Thomas explains, "The way we dress reflects not only our personality but also our economic, political, and social standing and our self-worth." Luxury brands have leveraged this insight and rolled out calculated marketing strategies to feed our desires and insecurities. And we have responded appropriately pursuing luxury to differentiate ourselves. The author defines the subject, "Luxury wasn't simply a product. It denoted a history of tradition, superior quality, and often a pampered buying experience. Luxury was a natural and expected element of upper-class life, like belonging to the right clubs or having the right surname." Yet, soon, in the interests of profits, luxury companies, "turned their sights on a new target audience: the middle market, that broad socioeconomic demographic that includes everyone one from teachers and sales executives to high-tech entrepreneurs, McMansion suburbanites, the ghetto fabulous, even the criminally wealthy."This democratization of luxury made the goods accessible to more and grew the top and bottom lines. However, as Thomas concludes, this eroded all that made it special in the first place. She argues that Louis Vuitton now "has a logo as recognizable as the Golden Arches". Business leaders who control these brands "have shifted the focus from what the product is to what it represents". Francoise Montenay of Chanel believes, "Luxury is exclusivity. At a minimum, it must be impeccable. Maximum, unique."I enjoyed the histories of many of the luxury brands, characters featured like Bernard Arnault and Tom Ford, facts such as Charles Frederick Worth being among the first to stage fashion shows and the first to put a signature label on his clothes, pros and cons of brand licensing, designers becoming superstars, the always staggering practice of counterfeiting, the vintage market, and the impact of outlet malls. In terms of the book's premise, Tom Ford says, "Luxury fashion brands today are too available, everything is too uniform, and customer business too pedestrian." I suggest you draw your own conclusion by reading this tremendous book which is available to all but that will be read by a few.

I am going to deviate from the glowing reviews that I have read about this set of books. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed--the stories were nice and "lost mail" was an interesting concept. I have read books from each of these authors before and really like all of them. However, these books just didn't do it for me. The first one was sweet and I enjoyed it until the abrupt ending--it left me holding the iPad in my hand, not believing it was over. I did really enjoy the second book and it was well written. The third book, "Chasing Pearl" was my biggest disappointment. I have read many books by Hallee Bridgeman and can't believe I read one that I really did not like. I am a Texas girl through and through but I have to tell you that no one I know speaks in continued metaphors as was done in this book. That must drive some readers crazy--I couldn't always figure out what they were trying to say and if you are from another part of the country, beware! The number of metaphors was way out of proportion and made the characters sound like uneducated country hicks. I almost quit reading because I wasn't sure I could stand one more metaphor. I did finish it but it was a chore. I didn't care for the fourth book at all but that was just me. So, now to the final book. I'm not sure what I expected when it was supposed to tie all of the books together-I think I was expecting all of the characters to show up in the book and would have closure for them. That did not happen. Coupled with very poor editing, I was just glad to see the end of the book. I have never been crazy about "potato chip" books so I probably should have never read this. This will not keep me from reading all of these authors in other books but I am done with this kind of series.

I’m going to be honest and say that I’ve only read one of the books in this collection so far, but I loved it so much and I think it alone is well worth the purchase. Chasing Pearl by Hallee Bridgeman was a wonderful read. I love the connection it provides to her Jewel series family. Their grief over the loss of one of their own is palpable and so very realistic. Chase’s struggle as he seeks out what God wants for his life is real, but also encouraging. The fingerprints of God are throughout the story and I love that the characters are quick to recognize that. It’s refreshing to read about characters that are far enough along in their walk with Christ to recognize Him at work in their lives and to know what His voice sounds like when He speaks to them. I just really loved that aspect of the book. Many Christian fiction books are often about a character coming to know Christ or about a character who is a Christian, but hasn’t yet learned how to hear the voice of God in his/her life, to know what it sounds like. I love those types of books as well, but books that are more like Chasing Pearl are a nice change of pace.I will say that I experienced a little bit of tug of war in my mind about Violet. I loved her at first. Then I got a little frustrated with her. Then I realized that I was way more like her than I thought. :) And I thought about my own struggles with fear, with believing lies about myself and who I am, with reaching outside myself to people, with the weight I feel sometimes when I have to socialize, and I had a little more sympathy for her character and her struggle.Ms. Bridgeman also does an excellent job of capturing the awe-inspiring essence of literally touching the history of your family, of holding it in your hands. I love the reverence and excitement with which she approaches looking at the contents in the mail package from a generation before.I highly recommend reading Chasing Pearl! (And I’m sure the other books in the collection are good ones as well. Maybe after I’ve had a chance to read those, I will come back and add my thoughts about them.)

I loved this collection of books. It was so great to see how they all tied together at the end. My least favourite story would have been the ships one. While I loved the plot, it had a little too much kissing in it for me. I felt like the other four stories were a good blend of story and romance. While I have read all of Alana Terry’s books to date, I have not read any from the other four authors and look forward to remedying that soon.4 Stars because of the ships story but 5 for all across happiness. : )

I’ve read three books in this collection so far and really enjoyed them. Looking forward to seeing how the final book ties all these stories together. I’m also anticipating reading other works from these authors, enjoying these stories as I do.

I love how the styles of the authors are different but all the stories are interconnected. And just like the previous collection, I like how the last book ties together all the other little pieces of the other books, despite each book being set in different points of reference. Would recommend. If you have read the previous collection, definitely get it!! Can't wait for the Christmas one!

This was great! I had so much fun reading this! Each individual story was engaging and entertaining, and there were definitely moments of self examination. Which makes a perfect balance in Christian fiction. There's no preachiness, but the lead characters would do or say something and I would stop and ask myself if that was one of my shortcomings also.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading these stories of Lost mail and how much work it takes to puzzle out finding where the mail belong. The timing of God's hand on each piece. I cried and laughed at how God brought love and acceptance to those receiving this very special mail.

What a wonderful collection of delightful stories. Each author as created a tale with an intriguing plot, complex characters and story lines, and inspirational events. They have held true to the great beginning of this series in Out of the Blue Bouquets which was such a great collection. Can't give enough praise to this collection, this series. Don't miss these two exceptional collections!

First of all I'm from a heavy C++/Java background so I'm well versed in strongly typed languages, classes, inheritance and all that jazz. However, in my initial foray into JavaScript I found it so odd that I brought a few books to try and clear up some nagging questions as to why it behaved the way it did. 'HTML5, Javascript and JQuery' gets to the point quickly but it lacks detail on what's going on behind the scenes when it comes to JavaScript probably because it's not the book's only focus. 'A Smarter way to Learn JavaScript' has a lot of beginner fluff that isn't anything you wouldn't know already. In addition the exercises are tedious. This book hits the sweet spot for me. Even though it's a short book, no sentence is wasted. I managed to polish it off in just 2 days. Every chapter and every section is highly readable and more importantly useful in teaching the language from an already experienced C++ programmer's perspective. Love the sample code too which never gets too complex or too long to comprehend easily. This is definitely a book I will refer to again and again even though it only covers ECMAScript 5. I believe the author has another book dedicated to ECMAScript 6. Bravo to Zakas for writing something so concise and readable!

Awesome book on how objects work in JavaScript. This book really filled in some knowledge gaps, such as you can lock down objects to create some privacy using either preventExtensions() method, seal() method, or freeze() method. You learn about object attributes such as  ,,, and what they do. The book goes over constructors, prototypes, and inheritance showing you how they all work. One of my favorite parts of the book is how hasOwnProperty is explained...now I get it! I do like how the book starts off going over types and how to property use typeof and instanceof. This is not a book for complete beginners, but I think works as a wonderful intermediate book about JavaScript objects.

As a programmer with experience in how Java and C++ handle object-oriented concepts, this book was amazing and insightful. I cannot recommend this book enough for anybody trying to grasp some of the nuance of JS OOP quickly! Everything is explained perfectly and in less than 100 pages! I used to think JS was a horrible language with design decisions that made no sense to me. After reading this book, however, I have began to like all the little quirks this language has. It's really fun once you dig into it!

In general the book is very good, but, unfortunatelly, it does have some imperfections to it. For example, the constructor definition is quite vague: "A constructor is simply a function that uses "new" to create an object - any object can be a constructor". It is not strict enough and it doesn't really help. For an experienced developer, it restates the obvious in an disturbingly careless manner. For a developer new to JavaScript, it is most likely useless and confusing: a function _uses_ "new"? _What does this mean_? I've always thought it's me, a developer, who _uses_ "new" to make a constructor call of a function. There is no way to correctly explain what the JavaScript constructor is without elaborating on the notion of _receiver_, how it is bound to _a function call_, and how a "constructor function" is _logically_ different from other functions even though (and that's what the author is apparently talking about) there's _no_ _technical_ difference between them.Summarizing, the book is really good. For the most part is very thorough and solid. Definitely worth reading. But because of the things like the one above I am sorry to give it only four stars. Also, if you are deciding what books to read on JavaScript, whatever other books you choose, there is _the_ book on the matter: Effective JavaScript by David Herman. My personal belief, there's no other book on the language, that explains all the vital subtleties of it in such a clear and concise way.

I needed to learn JavaScript quickly for a project at work, coming from a .NET background. This book was perfect. These days I spend more time with JavaScript than .NET and I'm truly enjoying it. I'm still impressed by how much information Zakas could pack into this scrawny (less than 100 pages) book.I singled out this book because of the title, and was not disappointed. Javascript can be pretty daunting at the outset (if you come from the strongly-typed world), but once you get the hang of it, it feels quite liberating. This book definitely helped me understand how OO can be implemented in Javascript. Strongly recommended.

Great length (reasonable for the price, I think), with good structure and clear explanations. I personally like lots of examples, and I think this book could have a few more real-world examples, but that's kind of a quibble, because this is really well-written, and the examples that are in there are good. Also, this may not matter to others, but I love the physical elements of this book - the weight and texture of the paper, the large amount of white space, how the code looks, the dimensions and weight of the book - all perfect.

After reading this book from cover to cover, I know that I will continue to re-read portions of it as my JS skills grow. About 30% of it is currently over my head, but I feel with a little more experience (I'm focused on Node.js) that the principles described in this book will equip me for success. The other 70% that I did grasp has already proven to be extremely useful in my Node.js coding.

I bought this calendar to put on my husband's desk to give him a little something to look at each day and to feel like he's following along without forcing all my lengthy books and websites on him.I like that:It's well made, stands up on built in stand, paper is a good qualityIt has special stickers with landmarks at the backIt has lines on each page to add your own notesIt goes all the way to 41 weeks, 6 days for those late bloomersI don't like that:It seems to get ahead of itself. Measurement estimates for the first half of pregnancy vary pretty significantly from all other resources (including several doctor's offices). I solve this problem by crossing out measurements and entering them from other resources or from my own medical data.Overall great product and I would recommend it to others.

Countdown to My Birth is a very exciting way to keep up with the development of your child. There are all kinds of interesting phases that take place throughout the pregnancy and this calendar was a fun way for my wife and I to wake up each morning and "connect" with our child. We never read ahead and just looked forward to each new day when we could flip the date and see what our baby was going to "say." There is also a place to take "notes" on events that occurred each day as well as stickers with major marking points in the pregnancy (Hurray! You know I'm here, You hear my heartbeat, You see me in an ultrasound, etc.) I think what I really like about this is that it makes me (the father) feel more involved in the pregnancy and keeps me really excited to see my first child. I also think this will be a wonderful gift for my son when he is older so he can read what his mother and I were thinking/feeling during each stage of the pregnancy. I would buy it again.

I love this calendar for a couple reasons:(1) It's a good way to keep track of what week you're in and how many days you have left until your due date(2) Most of the daily entries are helpful (particularly the weight/length/growth ones). There are a few entries that are completely useless (particularly near the end when baby has all its essential organs and is just growing) but it's still a nice reminder that baby is coming soon(3) It's a way for my husband to feel involved. We read the entries together and it helps him get an idea of what is going on with baby.I definitely recommend that you go through the calendar as soon as you get it and write the dates on each page, since we sometimes skip a day or two and need to read multiple at one time. A couple friends have gotten this for the grandparents-to-be and recommend this as a great gift so that the grandparents also feel involved in the process.

I love this calendar! It is a sweet way to keep up with your baby's growth and development. A friend loaned me one for my first pregnancy, but I gave it back when my baby was born. When I found out I was expecting again, this was one of the first things I got, so we could keep up with all the little milestones, just like we did before! Now we have the added bonus of sharing the journey with our first born.

Love this calendar. Gives visual cues of how big baby is on that day and other things happening inside you. I got one of these for all 4 of my pregnancies and given as gift many many times. Highly suggesting getting this item.

I loved this so much during my first pregnancy but I think my husband loved it even more! It gave him a way to be involved in all the changes. I buy this for every friend and family member early on in their first pregnancy.

This calendar helped us get through the first part of the pregnancy, giving great information about what is actually happening. I know you can find this all online, but we put it in the kitchen and it was a quick and easy read every day.

I received this as a gift when I was prego with my daughter. My husband and I loved it. We had it sitting in our bathroom and every morning we would flip the page to see what our daughter was up too. It was so informative, and such an eye opener to what was happening with our baby girl daily. I loved it so much, I passed it on to a friend when she became pregnant. And I bought one for my sister-in-law when found out she was pregnant. It awesome and a wonderful gift every first time mommy needs!

Agent Zigzag: A True Story of Nazi Espionage, Love, and Betrayal, by Ben Macintyre

From Publishers Weekly

London Times associate editor Macintyre (The Man Who Would Be King) adroitly dissects the enigmatic World War II British double agent Eddie Chapman in this intriguing and balanced biography. Giving little thought to the morality of his decision, Chapman offered to work as a spy for the Germans in 1940 after his release from an English prison in the Channel Islands, then occupied by the Germans. After undergoing German military intelligence training, Chapman parachuted into England in December 1942 with instructions to sabotage a De Havilland aircraft factory, but he surrendered after landing safely. Doubled by MI5 (the security service responsible for counterespionage), Chapman was used to feed vital disinformation to the enemy and was one of the few double agents to delude their German handlers until the end of the war. Meticulously researched—relying extensively on recently released wartime files of Britain's Secret Intelligence Service—Macintyre's biography often reads like a spy thriller. In the end, the author concludes that Chapman repeatedly risked his life... [and] provided invaluable intelligence, but it was never clear whether he was on the side of the angels or the devils. Of the two Zigzag biographies this fall (the other, by Nicholas Booth, is reviewed below), this is clearly superior. (Oct. 9) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Bookmarks Magazine

Past writers have attempted to recount this fascinating bit of history, but lack of information and official censorship have kept the full story from being told. Thanks to BritainÂ’s Freedom of Information Act, Eddie ChapmanÂ’s voluminous MI5 files are now available to the public, and Ben Macintyre has made full use of them in this riveting tale. Critics unanimously praised MacintyreÂ’s talents: his fluid writing style, his ability to build suspense, and his biting humor. Vivid descriptions, deft characterizations, and exhilarating action scenes (as well as secret codes, invisible ink, explosives disguised as household objects, parachute drops, cyanide capsules, and beautiful women) put Agent Zigzag on a par with any great spy novel or thriller.Copyright © 2004 Phillips & Nelson Media, Inc.

This is a fascinating spy story from WW II. It's not quite as good as Macintyre's Operation Mincemeat book. But it has some very clever deceptions, cover ups, sabotage and other exploits of Eddie Chapman (alias Fritz, alias Zigzag).Eddie was a British citizen, rough Soho neighborhood criminal and safecracker. His capture and imprisonment on the British isle of Jersey coincided with the Nazi takeover of Jersey. Not wanting to spend his time time a Nazi jail he offered his explosives and criminal expertise to the Nazis. They took him up on it and after training, sent him to Britian to commit sabotage. He was promptly captured. Not wanting to spend his time in a British jail, he offered his spy services to MI5. He had just been trained as a Nazi spy and had loads of information. The Brits took him up on the offer. He was then trained in British spy techniques (while regularly sending messages back to his German handlers). The whole story is a romp through the double agent spy system during WW II. The fate of Eddie/Fritz/Zigzag is for the reader to discover. I highly recommend this book.

This is the second book I have read by Ben McIntyre (the first was “A Spy Among Friends”, about Kim Philby) and I continue to be impressed. There exists a genre called ‘historical fiction’ in which an author writes a story that takes place sometime in the past, maybe in the same time frame as an important event, or maybe about some important historical figure. There are various levels of accuracy – sometimes there is nothing historical whatsoever other than the story takes place in the past. Or sometimes a story is a reenactment of actual events, grounded in reality and with evidence of significant research. Then there are the books written by masters of the genre who create highly readable, thoroughly engaging accounts of actual historical events that transport the reader into the era and read like the best modern day thriller (Steven Pressfield, Robert Harris, and David L. Robbins come to mind).Ben McIntyre is one such author whose works are at the very top level of the genre. He has the rare ability to turn the results of his exhaustive, stunningly complete research into a book that reads like a top shelf novel but drips with authenticity at every turn. In “Agent Zigzag”, we learn of the exploits of Eddie Chapman, an Englishman with an extensive criminal record who becomes a spy for the Germans but ultimately becomes a double agent run by the British. Despite his past, he becomes quite successful, supplying information to the British, supplying disinformation to the Germans, and earning the respect of both sides while doing it. He is one of the few spies who actually provided information which helped turn the war in favor of the Allies. In fact, one of his British handlers stated that his exploits were so incredible that they were beyond conception for the writer of fiction. The book starts with Eddie the criminal deserting his lunch date by jumping out of a window as the police close in on him, and ends with Eddie the spy encountering that same woman (whom he marries) in a different restaurant after the war is over. In between the lunch dates, he gets picked up by police, gets sentenced to jail, gets collected by the Germans, and learns tradecraft, bomb making, and wireless communications. He is parachuted into England, where he immediately goes to work for the Allies and commences to supply his German handlers with disinformation, perform various espionage tasks, and help in measurable ways to win the war. He even returns to the Germans, survives numerous interrogations, and proceeds to supply his English handlers with information straight from the heart of enemy territory. The text is clear and readable, with proper grammar and structure. It is alive, however, and delivers the story at the pace of the best novel, but is peppered throughout with references to material obtained from MI5 archives, interviews, and other history sources. In fact, the last fifty plus pages are footnotes on the sources from which the material was obtained. If high school history texts were this well written, there would be a lot more historians around. This book is quite entertaining and satisfying, and at the end you will have learned things about the covert side of WWII that you would never have known otherwise. And all along the way you will marvel at how one man can do so many things and live to tell about it. I recommend “Agent Zigzag”.

The hero of the book was well dubbed "Zigzag." A minor British crook, Eddie Chapman was being held in a local jail on the Isle of Jersey when the Nazis took over the place. He immediately volunteered his services as a spy against Britain. The Germans finally accepted him and trained him to destroy the De Haviland aircraft factory in England, dropping him by parachute onto British soil. Once he got there, he immediately turned himself in to the authorities and offered to become a double agent against Germany. How they "destroyed" the aircraft factory is a great story all by itself, and Chapman's adventures would make a very good movie. In fact, a rather bad movie was made of it -- Triple Cross, starring Christopher Plummer -- as the studio tried to add little Sean Connery/James Bond touches to a story that was far more interesting than the script. I chanced upon that movie on TV just after I read the book, so I speak from experience. The book is a good example of a Boys' Own Paper adventure (with added sex). Macintyre tries his best to unravel the twists in Chapman's character, but the spy remains just too twisty. However, he does a good job with the supporting players -- Chapman's British and German spymasters, a collection of eccentrics, like the enthusiastic Nazi who was hipped on English folk dancing. Macintyre also has worked hard to separate Chapman's version of things from what actually happened -- Chapman, to put it kindly, liked to embroider. Amazon offers the Kindle edition at a very low price, and it gives good value for the money, since one can reread it as one rereads a spy thriller. This thriller just happens to be true.
