The Rural Life, by Verlyn Klinkenborg

From Publishers Weekly

Klinkenborg's third book (after Making Hay and The Last Fine Time) is a selection of columns originally appearing on the New York Times editorial page under the heading "A Rural Life." They document in vivid detail the daily challenges of life in the country, and on a farm in particular. Though the columns are drawn from seven years of writing, the book is organized into a single year-12 chapters starting in "January" and ending in "December"-and flits from topic to topic, relying on a few short passages of news or descriptions of holidays to mark the passage of time. Likewise, the author never sticks to one place for long, but ranges across the continent of the U.S. and glimpses events in dozens of country towns from Wyoming and New Hampshire to Minnesota and New Mexico. Some episodes are emblematic of contemporary American culture: a high school football game, President Clinton's dedication of Walden Pond, the disquiet in the days following September 11. Others are more intimate passages discussing the author's family and the solace he finds in keeping bees, stacking hay or simply turning earth. Though this highly personal chronicle lacks any narrative arc other than the changing of the seasons and the author's emotional reaction to them, nothing in the prose is accidental, and the deliberate, finely hewn sentences convey, above all else, the seriousness with which Klinkenborg takes the task of watching the world around him. A heady meditation on our relationship to nature, echoing the works of the transcendentalists Thoreau and Emerson, the writing is much closer to poetry than essay.Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

Klinkenborg is a member of the editorial board of the New York Times and author of Making Hay. This collection of essays, most of which have previously been published in the NYT and elsewhere, describe his experiences of rural life, from his farm in upstate New York and in the American West. When a book is a compilation of essays, it can often suffer from a lack of continuity or context. While these selections are gathered according to month, they leap from geographic locations without regard to year; in fact, there is no indication of when they were written (except a couple references to 9/11). Klinkenborg explains: "If spring seems to be well advanced on one page and balky and weeks behind on the next...I'm probably describing two very different springs." Because he writes so well, one can endure the bumpy ride. Recommended for public and academic libraries.--Lee Arnold, Historical Soc. of Pennsylvania, PhiladelphiaCopyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I have a confession to make: I am a huge fan of Verlyn Klinkenborg, so I am a totally biased reviewer. His writing fuses together the transcendental writing of a great poet and philosopher with the practical, no-nonsense outlook of an experienced farmer/rancher. The result is a persona and a sensibility that is at once ethereal and mundane. Or said a better way, he has a way of seeing makes the mundane ethereal. He makes the prosaic lyrical and the lyrical prosaic, moving back and forth effortlessly, or rather in a way that looks effortless but is really quite crafty. For people who do not know the rural life, he opens it up to them with passion, authenticity and intimate beauty. Klinkenborg was born in Colorado where I was raised and now live, which is a big point in his favor, in my view. He was raised in Iowa and California, in a long line of family farmers that traces it roots back to Germany. He has a Ph.D. in English literature from Princeton and is a member of the editorial board of the New York Times, where his essays are widely read and admired. But this book and its equally admirable sequel, More Scenes from the Rural Life, represent the best of his work. His writing has a muscularity and a leanness to it that come from relatively short sentences and a very sparing use of adjectives. The result is, when he does allow himself an adjective, it stands out brilliantly, like a Christmas ornament on a bare bough in winter. Here he describes a violent storm in Wyoming: “Some clouds had become castellated, and others had been beaten into sheets of lead or folded back upon themselves again and again like Damascus steel. The galactic jets of the deep universe were present and so were the nebulae. So too was the tight, blue-tinted hairdo of a matron marching westward in dudgeon across the sky. She canted over the sagebrush flats, hit an updraft, and was teased into nothingness.” Here, more philosophically, he reflects on gardening and how nature rescues the gardener: “A garden is just a way of mapping the strengths and limitations of your personality onto the soil. It would be too much to bear if nature didn’t temper a gardener’s ambition or laziness with her own unsolicited abundance.” If I were a university professor, I would teach a class I would call “American Transcendental Land.” The books for the course would be: Thoreau’s "Walden" and perhaps also his "A Week on the Concord and Merrimac Rivers", Rowlands’ "Cache Lake Country", Leopold’s "A Sand County Almanac", both of Klinkenborg’s "Rural Life" books, and either a book of verse from Wendell Berry or his magnificent novel "Jayber Crow". Until I get that all set up, there is nothing stopping you from reading these magnificent texts.

Verlyn Klinkenborg is a perfect writer. I can see myself in his house and wandering around his property in the snow. I have never lived where it snowed as much as it does in upstate New York but I would like to try for a while. I would have to adopt his attitudes first. I know he is familiar with the west but I didn't care for those sections of the book as much as the up state New York sections. I just have never wanted to visit those sections of the country. He never said if he decided to raise pigs. I hope not unless they were pets. Mr. Klinkenborg is an exceptional writer and I hope he writes forever.

I have been reading, and loving, Verlyn Klinkenborg's books since The Last Fine Time, and The Rural Life delivers the same luminous prose that so defines his writing. These beautifully crafted essays describe life on a farm, but they also exquisitely limn a mind present to the ebb and flow of nature and community. Like the "suppleness of light" Klinkenborg notes in late October, his gifts with language capture the glow of the ephemeral before it slips beneath the horizon of another day, another season; like the "intermittent, staccato whine" of a cricket, these essays anchor us at once to the personal and the universal, with phrasings as reassuring as a front porch and as pursued as true North. A beautiful book.

When I read Verlyn Klinkenborg I'm overcome with a deep sense of peace. I loved his work in the New York Times; this book is all that and more.

Love his writing! Moved to the country myself and enjoy his shared experiences. He's a fine writer

I love this writer, but actually prefer his later work, I think it's called "More Rural Life." He writes beautifully.

Verlyn Klinkenborg has an amazing way of writing about country life and not just on his upstate farm but all over the country -- I have ordered two more of his books just so I can enjoy his lyrical style.

My husband is reading "The Rural Life" and enjoying it immensely. The writing is very good and largely free from the initial conjunctions that plague most contemporary prose. The essays are reminiscences on life inspired by countryside dwelling, and are insightful and unfailingly entertaining.

From the Author

I didn't just write FIERCE JOY: I lived it, day by day, minute by minute. This book began as notes scribbled in a $1 black-and-white speckled CompositionBook--the kind we all used in elementary school. I bought one the day I firstwent to my first neurologist, and began filling it with questions more than answers. It was as if that were the first day of a new course I was taking: a lesson in what my newlife would be like living with two terrible illnesses. Facts and questions soon shared space with ideas and feelings--and tears also lefttheir marks. One notebook soon filled and I needed a second, then a third. I was exploring a whole new world, and needed to understand it. And, as a writer, Idid that word by word. Then, the day I had to sign my final Disability papers and leave my job--a day when I felt my heart was cracking into jagged pieces--I began to realize that my notebooks were filled with the gold I could mine for the book I suddenly realizedI was going to start writing--the book I suddenly announced I would write to a room full of strangers, the words jumping out of my mouth before I knew what I was saying. There are now more than five notebooks, all crammed with scraps, receipts, stickdrawings, doctors' appointment cards, prescriptions, get-well cards, and notes of all kinds...and the best of those glints of gold became part of the book you are about to read. Writing this book helped me understand how to go on living: how to change my lifeand reach for joy. Not a pale or saccharine joy, but the robust, hard-won fierce joy that flames up out of harsh moments: the joy that is the honey in the rock. I hope you find your own joy: fierce, or gentle.

"Fierce Joy" is a beautifully written memoir about the author's pain, suffering, and coping with two very serious, incurable, debilitating diseases: lupus and severe peripheral neuropathy. Schecter writes vividly and poignantly about her experiences with and anger at having such awful physically incapacitating diseases. She describes in detail the pain and humiliation these diseases have caused her, and her efforts to cope. But rather than being a didactic, dry, depressing medical memoir, "Fierce Joy" is a joy to read. Schecter also writes about the happiness and comfort she experienced because of the help of many physicians, therapists, family members, friends, flowers, music, and religion. She details her medical and emotional ordeals with a remarkable sense of humor and lack of self pity. "Fierce Joy" will inspire people not only suffering from lupus and peripheral neuropathy, but other painful, disabling chronic conditions. It should also be read by their physicians, caregivers, family members, and friends.

This is an excellent Memoir told by a strong, brave woman who has a progressive Illness. I once worked with Ellen and saw first hand how she suffered in pain and with the loss of her physical independence from this illness. This is story of one woman's fight for the life she worked hard to build, in addition to telling a beautiful love story between Ellen and her husband and the wonderful life they worked hard together to give their children. I always admired Ellen, and while I haven't seen her now in almost 20 years, reading this book brought back so many memories of her strength, talent, and ability to be a great woman and friend in spite of all she lived with.Denise Coleman

I read this book first because I went to high school with Ellen, and we were in the same sorority there, so, of course, I was intrigued. We hadn't been in touch, but another friend suggested it to me who is still in contact with her. It is so well written and extremely touching. She has faced incredible challenges that others would have found totally destructive with grace, courage, and determination. I recommend this to anyone facing difficulty, anyone wanting to read a positive story about facing life's uphill battles, and anyone who wants to read a story about success under difficult circumstances.Ellen, I was so inspired.

I found Fierce Joy to be an incredibly moving story of the author's journey through debilitating illnesses only to come out stronger and more gifted at the conclusion than I could have imagined. It made me laugh and cry, sometimes within the same paragraph. And, while Ellen is learning to deal with pain, complicated medical and emotional issues, we grow with her. There are moving stories about her incredible doctors, her husband's and children's support, and a support group that learns how to help each other. I recommend Fierce Joy to everyone -- whether in good health or not.

Beautifully written, honest account of a illness and the author's ability to cope and live a good life. Inspiring. I especially loved it was set in NY and my neighborhood.

Ellen's excellently written book made me think of the Joseph Campbell's description of the Hero's/ Heroine's journeys that takethem beyond seemingly insurmountable problems to a place where they can find their 'bliss'. It brings this journey to the modern world in a way that we can identify with. The debilitating diseases she suffers, and her search for physical healing are told about with honesty and humor. Rather than give in to her physical limitations, she decides to live life to the fullest possible extent. Her 'spiritual' journey, opening new doors, is even more compelling. A journey that we can understand and follow. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to find inspiration.

This remarkable book will move and inspire, and it merits a wide audience, especially among those who provide care and services to someone with severe pain and terrible medical problems. I am in awe of all that the author endured and overcame. Her amazing talent of describing her experiences brings them to vivid life. Don't expect a chronology of her illnesses; instead she focuses on some high and low points and her past, her spiritual connections and her discovery of Fierce Joy. I felt as if I were on her team throughout this journey and laughed out loud and pumped my fist and shed tears of joy.

I was bored with this book...I have CIDP, and had expected it to be more about this Disease. I got about 1/2 way through this book, and actually put it down...and that was it! I NEVER do that! I leafed thru the rest and found nothing that even interested me...sorry!

While this book is informative, and scientifically accurate, it is completely disorganized. The author will ask a question such as why do we sift flour, then go off on a tangent about why you should weight eggs, just to come back and say sifting flour isn't all that important anymore. Additionally, the topics covered in a single chapter often are not all that related. For example alongside the flour conversation was a conversation about how to test for bad eggs and how to estimate the calories in the meal. However, there is still some great science in this book. In between explaining things such as the difference between egg foam and fat foam, the author would outline topics like how to read an organic molecule diagram. This definitely has it’s pro’s and con’s. For me as a soon to be Chemical Engineering graduate, it’s great, it keeps me intrigued by talking shop about chemistry. To the average reader without a STEM degree, it might be a little overwhelming, verging on completely useless. The never ending stream of science facts kind of take away from this book being about food. The author does go into great detail into many things that it would be helpful to know in the kitchen. However he often does not tie an idea back to cooking after he has fleshed it out. For example the chapter on fats and oils did not really leave me with many cooking tricks but much more knowledgeable about the organic structure of different types of fats. The fact that it doesn't exactly cover the science well enough and isn’t really a cookbook makes it difficult to see what this author was going for or what he wanted the reader to get out of it. It does also concern me that people with less knowledge in chemistry are potentially learning some of the more difficult parts of chemistry through a cookbook. For those of you with a science background looking for a textbook to tell you what's happening in the kitchen, this book is for you. You will relearn many of the topics you cover in organic and general chemistry, in the context of cooking. However if you are a science novice looking for advanced cooking techniques you seem to be out of luck. Additionally, I wish it covered more of the health effects of food, and how different foods affect our bodies. This seems like a great venue for that kind of information and I was left disappointed it was missing.A side note, I read this book on kindle, and did not at all like the formating. The pages really felt like a wall of text and there were not nearly enough diagrams of some of the organic chemistry lessons. An inclusion of more visual aids would definetly help a lot of readers understand some of the chemistry better.

This book comes off as a write up of Google searches. It contains lots of interesting factiods, to be sure, and on the whole is worth the price, but it's neither a chemistry course nor a cooking course nor -- what you'd hope for -- a braiding of the two. It's not a biochem course, not even a lightweight one, as it doesn't build from first principals -- it just throws out whatever chemistry facts happen to pop up, some times at a basic level and sometimes at a very deep level -- too deep, I'd think, for most cooks. Neither is it a cooking/baking course (it mixes both), as again it doesn't build up an understanding from basic principals. So you get a chemistry fact, sometimes paired with a curious fact about cooking or baking. Then off to the next fact. Fortunately, it has a table of contents and a good index, so at least you can find the tidbits you might be looking for. Many times they are interesting, but not always. My degrees are in chemistry and I consider myself reasonable well read when it comes to gastronomy, so I enjoyed the book and read it completely. But I think if I were someone expecting to be lead through an understanding of basic food chemistry and simultaneously basic cooking/baking I would have been confused and disappointed. You'd come away with some facts, but I don't think you'd come away with an understanding of the chemistry of cooking or baking, and I don't think you'd become a better cook (or chemist).

Mr. Field took on an impossible task. His first sentence in Introduction, "Your mother was a chemist." is patently true. But when he tried to give you a taste of your mother's chemistry cum cooking, he failed. He failed because he attempted something impossible. Cooking is not only chemistry and physical chemistry with some physics thrown into the pot, it is a very complex high-level science. To understand cooking chemistry you have to be a top-level chemist, physical chemist, biochemist, and reasonably well-read microbiologist - all things that Mr. Field is not and the lay reader is not for sure. Actually, only good Food Chem engineers fit this category, and those do it well in their particular areas of expertise. So we are left with trivia, some interesting, some slightly pretentious, some partly wrong. And a few cute-to-wow(!) recipes, but hardly enough to call it an accidental cookbook. Nora Efron's "Heartburn" was better in this department. Beyong the fact that one cannot do this in less than 800 pages and a BSc in Chemistry with a Major in Biochemistry, there are real flops here. At the lay level that Mr. Field writes for, most of the chemical formulas are totally unnnecessary. His explanation of chemical bonds is at best inaccurate and does not really contribute to one's understanding of baking bread (which, BTW, is one of the better culinary foreys in this book), and most of his diagrams are making lay person as befuddled as before. Why, I ask, should the reader peruse the relationship between sugar concentration and solution boiling point? To show that its exponential? How does it contribute to understanding cooking? Beats me. Likewise the pH table, which has no meaning without understanding the concept of Molarity and Normality in concentration. The physical chem calculations of scaling-up are a bit mixed up and in his example of a bread loaf, mistaken. And why extract DNA from squash? Will it make you a better baker of the pumpkin pie? I strongly suggest your granny, or at least Fannie Farmer. In a nutshell, much ado about very little, and, like most bad cooking - mostly spices and salt.
