This book is a great survey of the tools used by others who fell, saw, dry, and mill their own lumber. I found it to be informative, and full of good background info, but it lacked depth in areas that would help me get started. For example, the chapter on drying lumber ends not with any techniques to dry that log from the arborist who just left your yard but a reference to purchasing plans to build your own backyard kiln and the exotic process it uses. Most people start with one tree, and for some reason they decide they want to "make it into lumber" without spending $3000. This book wont help much.5 stars for writing, editing and interest, 2 stars overall for failure to deliver on the promise made by the subtitle

This book is a nice overview of the subject title. Not very in-depth but then it's not intended to be. There is some very useful information on the sawmill and lumber industry that should be very useful to someone considering purchasing a portable sawmill or hiring one. If you are looking for chainsaw and felling techniques keep looking as this book gives about as much information on that as is included in your saw's owners manual.

This book is exactly what I was looking for. I'm a novice at handling wood after it's harvested. OK, some low star reviews said it was more of an overview than detailed, but that OK. For me a general instruction on what needs to be done in the order it needs to be done and I can figure out the rest, either on my own or by researching more but at least I have a good working knowledge with good advice. The bottom line is this book gave me what I needed, a good insight into the logical steps with key pointers and what each means from point A to point E to get to an end product. No book can lead you by the hand an do the work for you, but the best books written by seasoned experts can get you headed in the right direction and this book does all of that.

Very informative book. I like the charts that tell how much logs weigh by type and length.

Loved it. Some of the info was unnecessary for me as I work in the tree care industry, and so, already know how to use a chainsaw. But even that info is worth reading again, and especially if one is unfamiliar with that aspect of things.

This was not the book I believe it leads people to believe it is. I've been looking at buying the attachment for a chainsaw so you can cut your own boards. This books talks very very little about that.

Nothing earth shaking, just good info. But you can find the same, and better information on discussion forums. The book is organized (forums are not)

Great book! I have learned so much, not just about cutting lumber, but also about the types of wood there are. Great read for anyone looking to build a house.

This book.. I'm not yet sure what to say about it. It has some decent information, but if you were to try and use it to make a pair of shoes, I'm not sure you'd have much luck. There's other stuff on the market that I think yields more information, better pictures, and better idea of the overall process than this one. To be fair, I wouldn't say you shouldn't own it. It's interesting to read about the Royal Society, and why they did what they did back then of archiving and talking about each craftsman's process, but ultimately, you couldn't find half the tools they used, and even if you could you might not want to use them for various reasons.Buy it, enjoy reading words from 400 years ago. Don't expect to make a pair of shoes through it.

This is a classic in 18th century shoe making translated by one of the current experts in the filed. This is a treasure for anyone involved in costuming or re-enacting of any sort.

Fantastic book. This book provides excellent information on 18th century shoe making. With no prior knowledge it would certainly be a challenge to create a pair of shoes from this (or any) book but it non the less provides an unparalleled amount of detail and instruction. Includes both the translation and original text as well as illustrations and photographs. The translation is clear and easy to follow though it does contain a certain amount of vocabulary specific to the trade and era.

De Garsault's original eighteenth-century work on shoemaking and shoes found in facsimile here is much enhanced by scholarly notes to the English translation; excerpts on shoes from other historical writings; annotated introductory material on the history of shoemaking; color photographs of tools, materials, and finished shoes with informed annotations to complement the simpler, plainer illustrations of the original work; a glossary of nearly 20 pages; and extensive bibliography and section of suggestions for further reading. One would not know there was so much to shoemaking, as a glance through the glossary with its many technical and some foreign words and terms attests. All of this is in book of the highest production quality with marbled endpages, expert color photographs (as in a museum catalog), and appealing design and format.The purpose of the 1700's publication of the now-classic work was as a documentation and reference on the art and crafts of shoemaking. As a Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau asks in his "Forward" in the original as a way of stating the purpose, "Can not one expect new levels of perfection in the arts when scholars, practiced in their different branches of the physical sciences, take the trouble to study and elucidate the often ingenious operations that the artisan carries out in his workshop?" De Garsault's "Art of the Shoemaker" was an illustrated text and manual meant to preserve and make widely available skills and techniques for making shoes in the decades preceding the Industrial Age when many of these operations would come to be done by machines. The French Royal Academy of Sciences could not have foreseen this; but they recognized that society and industry were changing to meet a growing demand for everyday consumer goods from an increasingly democratic, bourgeois class able to purchase and appreciate these. As du Monceau elsewhere explains, "The academics should further apply themselves to clarifying practice in order to subject a number of delicate operations, which depend entirely on the accuracy of the eye or hand and the success of which are only too often uncertain, to certain rules." Author De Garsault accomplishes this sparing no detail. The "delicate operations" depending on "the accuracy of the eye or hand" were like instructions for the design of shoemaking machines in the coming Industrial Age. The translator's Introduction notes, "Mechanization of shoemaking began in the United States"; although this was not not completed until late in the nineteenth century.The text, illustrations, and Saguto's rich annotations, many of which are like short essays, make for fascinating reading by anyone with an interest in social history, the history of crafts, and in clothing and costume. This "Art of the Shoemaker" is a recent addition to Texas Tech University Press's outstanding and growing series of exceptionally well-illustrated works with content that is both engaging and scholarly relating to what is termed "material culture." Other recent books cover sunbonnets and spurs. Readers and students of social history, consumer goods, manufacturing history, historical crafts, and like topics want to be keeping up with what this publisher is putting out in this field.

My mother suffers from Fibromyalgia and has for a good portion of her life. I got this set in hopes that I would gain some new insight into what Fibromyalgia is and how I can better understand what's going on with her. Sometimes it's hard for others to understand what someone with Fibromyalgia is going through because you can't see it, doctors don't know what causes it, and really there's not a 100% way guaranteed to diagnose it. So all around it has been frustrating for my mom dealing with this pain.There were some really great ideas and information in these two books and I can't wait to share it with my mom. I'm sure it will offer her some hope and of course, some great new recipes to try. :) Highly recommend.

This book is really useful in learning more about what fibromyalgia is, managing symptoms, home remedies you can try and support groups you can join to help cope with fibromyalgia. It was helpful to also learn about the factors that contribute to fibromyalgia, importance of a proper diet (including examples), awesome recipes, supplements, and even herbs for fibromyalgia! I can’t believe the book set even includes a shopping list to consider and finding the right time and place to shop! Great work! Yet another resource to add to my arsenal of research!!! Highly recommend!!!

This Box set: Fibromyalgia and Fibromyalgia diet were excellent resources. These books were jammed packed with information and really helped me to learn more about my condition. Thanks again - really informative!

Wow, these two books really teaches you a lot about Fibromyalgia. Before reading this, I had no idea what Fibromyalgia was. I couldn't even believe you could help lessen your symptoms through a diet. Overall, must read book.
