Bought to give my daughter confidence. Most of book was about child coming up with excuses and being embarrassed about wearing eye patch. Character eventually owns up to eye problem and is accepted by peers but with little emphasis. In two short lines prob is solved. cute enough but I was looking for a book to emphasis confidence and importance of wearing eye patch telling kids to have confidence about it from the get go rather than after several failed attempts

Great idea but very disappointing. Started out talking about how ballerinas don’t wear glasses and patches. I was hoping this book would help my daughter feel more comfortable with glasses and a temporary patch, not point out how different she would be. Also used the word stupid which is a big no in our house.

We were so excited to receive this book, but in all honesty it was disappointing. As a mother of a now 6 year old who patches 6 hours a day, I was looking for a read that would boost her confidence in being a "patcher" But this book didn't do it. Instead, the character is avoiding the fact that she's wearing a patch and pretend playing so she won't have to speak about the true reason behind her patch.I would not recommend this book as a read for children who patch.

Cute book for both girls and boys about "fitting in" when patching. I appreciate that this little girl, while a ballerina who likes pink, also likes pirates. This story appealed to both my elementary school-aged son and daughter, both of whom have to patch. Another great title on this topic is "Jacob's Eye Patch".Good to send these books to school for the teacher to read to the class when a child has to go into school with an eyepatch. We did this on the first day our kids patched in school. Having the story ready aloud to their class really helped the other kids to understand and accept the patching and ours not to feel self-conscious about wearing the patches in school.

I bought this book for my 4 year old who has struggled with amblyopia her entire life... I wasn’t impressed with the story line at all. The girl over comes her patch at school by telling the kids at school she’s a pirate ballerina... The story did not connect with our child and it just wasn’t well written. I was disappointed.

I have a girl who started patching for amblyopia at age 5. I saw this book online then, but I wasn't sure from the reviews I'd seen at the time if it would really be a good fit for her. I eventually bought it last year when she had to return to patching. Wow, I wish I'd bought it sooner as the character matched my girl a lot: about the same age at diagnosis, also had reddish hair, loved dance, and was picky about which color of glasses and patch she wore. Some reviewers thought it strange that the character didn't want to explain the patch to her friends and instead hide behind her imagination by pretending to be a pirate, one-eyed monster, etc. I totally get that, though, as the character was very out-going and fun-loving but still felt embarrassed by her patch, which is something I think kids will relate to well. Very few kids WON'T feel embarrassed wearing a patch--especially to school, and I think a story that doesn't address that issue that older kids (as in 3 or 4 and older) will have isn't helpful. In the end, it's no big deal that the character has to wear a patch. Her friends are still her friends. (*I personally recommend NOT having your child wear a patch at the start of a new school year. Wait a month or so to allow his/her classmates to see your child for who he/she really is, and THEN introduce the patch with the help of your child's teacher and a great book like this read to and discussed with the class.*)

This book is awesome! It provides my daughter with an example of another child who has to wear an eye patch. Not only does it make patch wearing more understandable, but it helps provide young children with the vocabulary necessary to talk about their medical condition. Plus, it helps her feel normal and accepted in a world that preaches conformity. I definitely recommend this book!

I bought this book for my daughter after she had to start patching for amblyopia. It quickly became one of her favorite books. I don't know why except that she got asked "why are you wearing a patch?" a lot and this book gave her a character to relate to.
