I can hardly say enough wonderful things about this book, but I'll start with the writing, which is fresh, inventive, and surprising at times. Then there's the subject matter, which is a bundle of touching and humorous vignettes that explore the life of Mozart through his own pet starling, Star. And yes, Mozart did have a pet tame starling that flew around in his home, adding to what was a joyful blend of chaos, commotion, and some of the most brilliant composing ever to grace our planet. Parallels and observations are made to and with the author's own beloved tame starling, Carmen. This book is written for sensitive readers who possess an appreciation for art and nature. A careful reading will provide you with a greater understanding of the expanse of starry space that connects nature and art. I will read the book again, to be sure, and I will also write a letter of appreciation to the gifted author, Lyanda Lynn Haupt.
Delightful book about human/natural world interactions, something Lyanda Haupt does so well. I loved her books Crow Planet and Urban Bestiary, so I was thrilled when I heard about this book. It was a great read, mixing stories of her experience raising a starling with historical material about Mozart's starling (yes, he had one, too), scientific information about birds, and reflections on the nature of pets and our interactions with wild things. I would love to meet Carmen, Haupt's starling! Luckily, Haupt has posted videos of Carmen on Facebook.
A good attempt at fabricating the "perhaps this happened" scenario of interaction between Mozart and a pet starling. There's very little documented interaction between the two, so the book is required to follow the path of conjecture. It was a good attempt, but there just wasn't enough to sustain the rather tenuous storyline. I got fed up with the book, and actually threw it out before finishing it. I didn't want to be embarrassed by having such a bad book in my house.
Loved this book. Reads like a detective story and it's packed with facts about birds. music, research about language acquisition and how other species communicate. Might sound offbeat and it's riveting! I read it while relaxing at a beautiful spot in the woods by a lake it was the perfect setting to be transported to Mozart's world. The story and the mystery are all tied up neatly at the close. Only thing that was missing for me was a recording of the music discussed. I was in a location with limited internet service and couldn't call it up! a book to share with Mozart fans!
Author Luanda L Haupt takes the reader on a journey in time, a glimpse into the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his pet starling. As she too raised a starling her insight was factual and entertaining. I enjoy this book for the musical history and one of nature's always intriguing little brown birds.
Mozart's Starling is a delightful look into the fascinating world of a bird I always thought was a nuisance only to find out they are mimickers capable of song and an extensive vocabulary. In researching the mystery surrounding the story of Mozart's starling the author raises her own starling to learn of its innate abilities. My book club read this and we universally found it engaging and thought provoking.
Very interesting story of the starling owned by Mozart as well as the author's own experience with a pet starling. Very wellwritten a fun to read.
I, to, admit to being converted! Lyanda Lynn Haupt shines a convincing positive light on the otherwise loathsome starling. She describes her own journey of discovery in detailing the complex behaviors of the bird that inspired the equally complex life of Mozart, borne from her own transformational experience with rearing a rescued starling. Lyanda combines her musical and naturalist interests to compose an engaging description of sleuthing the details of the influence on Mozart's life by his pet starling. Obviously well read, and not shy about opining in many other disciplines, Lyanda also delves into linguists, evolution, genetics, animal cognition, and in the social acceptance of bird poop! An engaging and very rich story, indeed. The only shortfall in all this (aside from incorrectly translating Ein musickalischer Spass) was never providing a convincing explanation of how Mozart's starling was first found by the composer, ostensibly mimicking perfectly an otherwise never performed concerto!
