Great book for the nephew!

Shel Silverstein is an amazing author. Never fails to bring a smile to the readers face. Bought the book for my nephew. Big win with mom and a sweet book to read on Christmas.

Love it! This book is so sweet. Our family all loves giraffes, so when I saw this book I knew I had to get it, even though I really knew nothing other than what the cover showed. Now that I've read it, I can't wait to read it to my 6 year old. The word play is so fun!

My two year old daughter loves this book, we read it nearly every day. This is a clever story which involves a giraffe and a boy where each page in the first half of the book involves a recap and something new that happens to the giraffe, starting with a giraffe who stretched to be a giraffe and a half. The second half of the book counteracts the events and removes them one by one until we are left with the initial giraffe. My daughter tries to find the bee in most pictures, much like finding the mouse in the classic Goodnight Moon.

Grandson loves this. After a bit of help with the first reading, he insisted on reading it by himself several times and thoroughly enjoys it each time.

I bought this book because I have a grown daughter who loves giraffes and I love Shel Silverstein. I read this book to my 3 to 6 year old students in my Montessori class and they love it. I love it. The rhymes and pictures are silly and the repetition is wonderful for learning. Love it!

This book is so much fun. If you grew up reading Shel Silverstein, you know how unique his writing style truly is. A Giraffe and a Half is a tongue twister that is sure to have you laughing. Entertaining and fun for the whole family.

Isn’t it about a bunch of people who lived a long time ago?”“God loved those people who lived a long time ago,” she said. “Just as he loves us now. He wants us to know him better. That’s why God gave us this story. Now, let’s see,” she said, turning the first page. “It all starts with Genesis…” The Creator CreatesGenesis 1“What does Genesis mean?” Little Cub asked.“It means ‘the beginning,’” Mama said. “It’s about the beginning of the world…and how God loved us from the start!”God is our creator, the reason everything exists. He began with nothing; then he separated light from dark, he made water and land, and then he made all kinds of animals and plants to fill it all!Imagine what it must’ve been like to see the first stars streaking across the night sky. Through your family, the whole world will be changed.” Sarah Has a BabyGenesis 21Now, Sarah thought Abraham was cuh-razy when he told her what God had said. She’d wanted a baby all her life, but she couldn’t have one! And now she was way too old.She was so surprised when she found out she was pregnant. Nine months later, she had little Isaac. I picked this up to keep me company on a flight recently and thoroughly enjoyed it. Lately I had been feeling a little jaded by some of the books I was reading, but this was one of two I read on my trip that broke the spell of disappointment I had been under. Stuck in a rut when it came to non-fiction I have been mostly reading fiction in my free time.This was a very interesting story of a human doctor who catered to the needs of the undead and related mythical creatures. It never came off as campy while still straddling a dark humor feel. When you come across these sort of stories they often fall into the "Beautiful, female main character who is terribly talented is taken by surprise when a preternatural man-thing takes interest in her. All her strengths take a back seat the moment this dude-bro shows up and he rescues her again and again, thus cementing their lusty bond," or some horseshit. Thankfully, this story does not fall into that stereotype.These characters are varied, strong in a tangible way that is not overdone and yet flawed. While there may be a mopey vampire in the mix, the story does not come off as an angst-fest. They are not all beautiful and young, rich and prosperous, or all knowing and all powerful. Some are sick, some are old, and some are literally ghoulish. They are older, maybe a little jaded or short sighted in terms of their actions but ultimately good characters no matter what their diet may be. While the ground work was laid for a bit of a romance, it took a backseat to the plot and seems to be developing in a slow but real fashion. However, even this takes a backseat to a really touching relationship she had with an old family friend. I was also very keen on the way she built a relationship with the local ghoul community.While I wouldn't say the story itself was very surprising or that it was full of twists, I can say that the sense of community created between the characters and how they did not quite fit into the horror-fantasy genre in a stereotypical way was wonderful. Honestly, I could probably read story after story of just house calls the main character would take because...well, the idea of non-humans needing medical care and learning of their ailments and physiology really intrigue me.I would recommend this book and will certainly look into the rest of the stories available.Also, I really, really enjoyed the ghouls.

I am not a five star review-giver. In fact, I can't remember the last time I gave a five star review. But this book was everything I wanted it to be.Greta takes care of monsters. Just because they're not human doesn't mean they're not people, she says, and continues in the family tradition of doctoring the supernatural residents of London. And it IS London, written by someone who love the city and knows it well.I thought Greta was incredible. She's not "feisty," she's not "kick ass," she doesn't hit people or threaten them or seduce them, she's not a secret princess or half-werewolf or whatever it is that makes heroines in urban fantasy "special." She's human, with all the attendant failings and flaws. She cares. She's a doctor. She wants to help.When the supernaturally enhanced monks come for her friends - and for her - she does all she can. Because they might be monsters, but they're PEOPLE, and she takes care of them. They take care of her, too.The characters aren't perfect. People aren't. I wasn't fond if the odd romantic undercurrent between Francis Varney and Greta, because it seemed forced, but I'm not a big fan of romantic subplots. There's a lot of funny in the book, a lot of action, and a good place to the story. It's well written, well thought out, and well crafted. And with the amount if urban fantasy I read......that's all pretty unusual. I am looking forward to wherever Vivian Shaw takes Dr. Helping next.

I cannot put into words how much I enjoyed this book, but I will try! It was not what I was expecting and in this case, that made it all the more enjoyable. The book is well written and the story is fast paced and has some humorous moments. I cannot wait for the second installment in the series.Dr. Greta Helsing (as in that Van Helsing of Dracula fame) is a physician to the undead. She treats mummies, banshees, vampires and a host of other supernatural beings from folklore. She is not alone in her practice, but her colleagues are few. She does not make a lot of money and she gets by in her clinic as best she can. But a girl could really use a 3D Printer! One of the fun surprises was that this book takes place in present day London. Dr. Helsing is overworked and underpaid, but the undead need her to survive. Things are going along as “normal” until a serial killer begins killing human Londoners and stuffing cheap rosary beads in their mouths. But the undead are targeting as well. The serial killer is actually a cult of strange monks with a nefarious glowing blue light as their leader. Dr. Helsing, along with two vampires, a human museum researcher, and a family friend of unclear undead origins, set out to solve the mystery and save the city along with themselves.Author Vivian Shaw is an evil genius. This book is so much fun! There is mystery, adventure, history, humor, and romance. I can imagine this being made into a movie, but I hope people will just enjoy the book. I could not put this book down but I did not want it to end. To me, that is the mark of a great book. I cannot wait for the publication of Bad Company, the next book in the series. Please hurry!
