As a recently "new" World History teacher I wanted to find something that would help me in my new endeavor. Elementary school sucked the fun out of everything and, now moving into the middle grades, I have much more freedom to actually "teach"!I came across this book and figured it's a good tool for the toolbox. And it is! There's a a lot of neat ideas to add to lesson plans to spice up your classroom. Although it's history-based I'm sure you could integrate these concepts into any reading topic.Regardless, this is a thin and small book but there's some really good ideas that, if used routinely, I believe students will get used to and be able to relate to a subject that is normally not of much interest to kids these days.Overall, I'm satisfied I bought it. IMO it's worth the $20.

This could be considered the teachers' "bible" because it is jammed packed with many engaging and practical classroom activities. Many cool ideas are centered on student skills like debating, discussion, comparing, contrasting, interpreting complex text, group work, essay writing, and more. I purchased this book because I have followed Russel Tarr for sometime and have used many of his teacher's tools on his website Classtools.net. Like Classtools.net, this book doesn't disappoint and very useful on day 1.

Although I have been teaching for over 20 years, I'm always looking for new ideas to spice up my lessons. So, after reading the reviews, I decided to check out this book. There are some interesting ideas and strategies for both middle and high school classes.I know the author is British, so of course many activities were related to lessons in European history. However, it bothered me to find so many lessons about Hitler. There is so much more to world history than the period of WWII! I know I can take a strategy and use it to teach other topics in history, but somehow the examples from the book do not inspire me to think of other applications.Maybe I should check out Volume Two... or maybe another book.

I didn't know what to expect from the book but it has exceeded any expectations I had. It is enjoyable to read; not like a scholarly thesis paper, but in simple, easy to follow text that tired History teachers can easily comprehend. I have no regrets buying this book and am excited to implement some of the strategies in my classroom.

Great read all the way through, I will take the advice and i will implement a few new strategies to my pedagogy.

This book offers a wide range of practical activities for the social studies classroom. I'm so excited to start planning for next year and put this book to good use!

About the Author

Frans X. Plooij studied behavioral biology in the Netherlands in Amsterdam, Nijmegen, and Groningen, where he received his Ph.D. in 1980. He is a full member of several international, scientific societies including the New York Academy of Sciences. Together they studied infant development in free-living chimpanzees with Dr. Jane Goodall in the Gombe National Park, Tanzania, East Africa. Dr. Plooij is director of the International Research-institute on Infant Studies (IRIS) at Arnhem, and president of Kiddy World Promotions B.V. Hetty van de Rijt studied Educational Psychology at the University of Nijmegen, the Netherlands and obtained her Ph.D. in Physical Anthropology at the University of Cambridge, England. At the University of Amsterdam, Dr. van de Rijt studied the development of human babies in their home environment. I find this book to be really really helpful when I am frustrated trying to figure out why my daughter is so fussy! It has tons of insight and notes from other moms who have gone through the same thing. I also use the app that goes along with this book and it's crazy how spot on they can be! So helpful for getting through leaps!!!

So I went on the website and even bought the app, but the book has (IMO) a few valuable things not published anywhere else.1. My Diary section has a SUPER detailed checklist of some of the skills that help define your baby's interests and personality during each specific wonder week and how they express their new cognitive development. For example, i bought the book when my son was approaching the 37th week. At this point he didn't clap his hands or mimic people at all! I got concerned when I went through the checklist and realized it was very polar. Anything physical or involving movement he was way advanced, but this meant he didn't have time to develop other skills. I naturally pushed for more things involving movement and he was a happier baby. Now and again I go back to the skills I didn't check off and eventually a couple months later, they're all checked off.i.e. : Not checked "Switching Roles"- Asks you to build blocks by handing you his blocks, Asks mother to sing a song , then claps his hands Checked "Switching Roles" - Feeds crackers/bottle to mother, Can initiate a game by himself2. Top Games for specific wonder week has very relevant games that I normally wouldn't have thought of to play. For example, for the babies going through separation anxiety, they said to play hide and seek. I am astounded at how long my baby can be by himself calmly trying to look for me and going through every room until he finds me! Now he ventures out further by himself instead of clinging onto my leg in the living room. Honestly, I wouldn't not think to play hide and seek with a 8.5/9month old...but I guess they respond well to it! He even tries to slide closets doors since we've up-ed the bar and now I hide in closets and bathrooms where he has to open a door to get to me. As a new mom my zombie brain was running out of ideas to entertain him, but this section was a great source for new fun ways to stimulate his growing brain.3. Detailed description of the "magical leap forward." They describe it more in depth with examples. This was the first book that mentioned your baby will have a correlating fear of "being strapped in" during the week of Categories. My baby hated being strapped in his stroller, car seat etc.... This was the first book that warned me about it and made me more empathetic when it happened. My son cried so hard in the car seat he "exorcist-style" threw up everywhere in the backseat from getting worked up. After the stormy period he still protests but he now lasts longer in the seat.4. What you can do to help section. This section goes in depth of what you can do to help stimulate your child during each week. For example, they said to give an active baby room to investigate and explore, especially if the baby is already physically active and advanced. As the book suggested, I made obstacle courses for my baby and he loves it! He goes under and over couch sectionals/parts and crude forts. I introduced him to a gymboree room with a 5 foot high plastic indoor slide. Without any help or provoking on my end, he shocked me and everyone in the room when he climbed up the slide, turned around, and slid down superman style...and did it again 5x. He was 9.5 months at the time.Overall, if you really don't want to pay the money, then you can spend hours trying to look for the info elsewhere. But it's all in one convenient book and organized well and easy to navigate. Someone mentioned that there were fillers in the book such as quotes from other parents, but I liked how I can relate to other moms and dads who have the exact problem. The book also deals with how a "high-need" baby would act during the wonder weeks. Even though they don't blatantly use that term or attachment parenting, they do mention how a "very difficult" baby would act, which also helped me cope with my high-need baby.All in all, I would recommend this book because the few specific things that I have learned from it were invaluable and there is no price to making the life of 1st -time parents easier, especially when trying to understand their "fussy" and "very difficult" baby.

If you're on the fence about buying this book, do yourself a favor and get it! I'm a first time mom and decided to buy it after a few long sleepless nights when my baby was just a few weeks old. It has been a lifesaver! It helps me understand the changes my son is going through and the behavior to anticipate. As a new parent-or any parent- it can be disheartening to feel you are doing everything "right" and still not making your baby happy. It turns out they are just going through major mental and physical changes that happen at very specific, predictable ages. I even downloaded the corresponding app that gives me alerts when a new leap is coming, that way if my son is being extra fussy I know he's going through a lot and I can tune into the corresponding chapter to see how I can help him and myself during this change! I couldn't recommend this book enough!!!

Did you know babies need and enjoy being touched?! If not, this book is a good place to start. If you are looking for research supported (as in acknowledges the statements made have sources and discusses those resources), in-depth information on infant development and how to stimulate that development, this is not the book. This book is repetitive and a little bit condescending. I have an undergrad in psychology and focused on child development, 6 years ago and I wanted to be sure my knowledge was accurate and updated before my new little arrives and did not find this book at All edifying. In fact the writing borders on plagiarism since no sources are cited.There's also some bizarrely snarky undertones, assuming some really not great things about the readers parenting instincts/emotions toward baby and the "motivations" of infants. All of which are not in my opinion conducive to happy baby parent relations. I haven't found the book I'm looking for but I'll update with a recommendation when I do.

I've found this book to be very helpful at understanding the developmental "leaps" that children go through in their first year. I reference this book often, and it has helped me be a more empathetic, understanding parent! I would recommend this book to all parents, and it would also serve well as a baby shower gift. There is also a free iOS and Android app that pairs well with this book.The only reason I couldn't give this book 5 stars, is because I was turned off by some of the language in the book. The author refers to infants as "little screamers" and such. I get that babies scream and cry, but they're tiny humans who are trying to communicate their needs, and it was off-putting to read that they're being referred to in a disrespectful, almost derogatory manner.

I couldn’t make it past the third leap in this book, because I found the quotes from parents in each chapter so upsetting. The author reassures us that they are experiencing normal emotions. These are NOT normal feeling towards a very young baby (or any baby/child). From mothers “understanding how people could hit their children “ to a mother who threw her baby on the changing table to another who left her baby to scream it out for over two hours. These mothers are abusive and it is dangerous to quote them in parenting books as being normal. I’m horrified and still shaking even thinking about it.I otherwise found the information in this book somewhat interesting but mostly very intuitive. All of the games and activities suggested for each stage are pretty obvious just through normal interactions with your baby. But still, I did find some new insights and was happy to have my intuition reinforced. If not for the horrible parenting quotes, I would probably finish the book and give it three stars.

Reset Your Child's Brain has transformed my children in ways I couldn't have even imagined four weeks ago. I am embarrassed to say that my 3 and 7 year old boys were playing the iPad up to 10 hours a day (they each had their own. I can't even believe that, but they did). I had suspected for some time that the iPad was particularly disruptive to my 3 year old, but I truly didn't think I could 'survive' without the quiet that the tablets provided. How would I get anything done? What would the kids DO with all that time? After googling 'is the iPad bad for kids' and stumbling upon Dr. Dunckley's website and book, I made the decision then and there to take it away. We actually started the fast before I was able to read thr book! The results have been dramatic with my 3 year old.We went from:- 3-5 meltdowns a day- struggling with transitions between activities (putting the iPad down to eat, bathe, leave the house, go to bed, etc),- aggression towards his 1 year old brother,- and just general instability in his personality (constantly walking on eggshells around him)to a child who:- has 1 meltdown or less per day (he routinely has days without meltdowns and it's MUCH more mild when it does happen),- transitions are no longer an issue and do not cause meltdowns- he plays gently and enthusiastically with his younger brother; he even asks if he can hold the baby now!- his personality is so much more even keeled; small things no longer set him off or trigger meltdownsMy 7 year old used to routinely complain how BORED he was (after he had watched every video he was remotely interested in on YouTube). I would say "You have a room full of toys your never play with. Go find something." and he would respond with how boring ALL his toys were and there was nothing fun to do. He now plays enthusiastically with his toys, pretending with everything from Star Wars to building with blocks, to drawing (without using the iPad to think of things to draw). We now have a stash of board games to play in the evenings rather than stare at screens and I've found that I absolutely TREASURE the extra time I spend engaged with them. It sounds sappy, but it's true. I was so worried that taking the iPads away would mean so much more work for me, finding things to keep them occupied and it first, it was more work. But 4 weeks in, they now find their own activities to keep them busy and entertained. I can't believe what a complete turnaround it's been for us. This book was a lifesaver for my family.

I cannot express how grateful I am for this book! I was skeptical at first but tried out the suggestions as a last ditch effort and I really can see it transformed our son's mood and behavior.My 4 year old (about to turn 5 next month) had been acting up quite a bit over the last year, and generally was very moody and temperamental. He was having daily tantrums and outbursts, at home and at pre-school, and his teachers were concerned about his behavior too (he was very defiant, and once even threw a shoe at his teacher when she asked him to put on his coat!) He always seemed on edge, would have meltdowns often, and easily upset by even the smallest thing. We were walking on eggshells around him, embarrassed by his outbursts, and constantly wondering what small thing would set him off next. Our family life is otherwise pretty calm and stable so we just couldn't understand where all this was coming from. After one very upsetting tantrum he had at a relative's home, my husband and I were convinced there was an undiagnosed issue, perhaps adhd or defiance disorder or bipolar ("Dr" Google certainly wasn't helping us, as everything we looked up seemed to describe him). I knew deep down there was my sweet little boy but his behavior was not aligning with who we knew him to be and I was certain this was not normal and we needed to do something to help him.We were feeling defeated and at our wit's end. I was about to make an appointment with his pediatrician to look into having him screened for mood disorders, when that same day through serendipity and grace I came across a link to one of the author's articles online, and then immediately ordered this book and started reading it. Everything described seemed to fit my child exactly, but I was still skeptical. It seemed impossible that something as simple as reducing screen time would cause such a drastic and dramatic difference in moods.Plus, our son didn't have much screen time (or so I thought-- it actually ended up being close to an hour or two daily when we really tracked it) and besides, as we justified to ourselves, he only did iPad educational games. To my amazement (and horror) I found out those "stimulating" and "mind strengthening" games we thought were good for his brain were the root of the problem. We had been pretty careful about limiting passive television, but had no idea that the interactive games on the iPad were even worse!! This was a real eye opener! I wish this was common knowledge.Anyway, before I even finished reading the book, I hid his iPad on a high shelf and took away all other screen time, cold turkey. I figured it was worth a shot before we went down the formal diagnosis or medicinal route.The first couple of days were tricky, as we felt like we had to entertain him a lot more. But I had stocked up on fun coloring books and new toys like Jenga and dominos to offer him anytime he asked for the iPad. We actually didn't discuss the screen fast with him prior to beginning, as I wanted to avoid a meltdown and thought making a big to-do about it would make him focus more on not having the iPad. Instead I just removed all screens without notice while he slept and anytime he asked for it I told him "not right now" and distracted him with something else fun to do. He's young enough that we still have full control over his access to screens. I imagine the older the child the more difficult the removal may be.After the first couple of days our son stopped asking for the iPad and I couldn't believe how easy that transition actually ended up being. To my amazement he started to come up with activities to entertain himself as the days went on. I didn't hear "I'm bored" like I used to and he'd find ways to play with toys in creative ways (for example, using pieces from his art set to act out a soccer match, or arranging his dinosaurs to act out a story). His focus improved significantly too as the days went on. Just yesterday he spent half an hour engrossed in playing with his trainset on his own. This used to never happen before the screen fast, except for when he was playing on the iPad (which was part of the reason why we relied on it since it would keep his attention when we needed some time to get stuff done). We used to use the iPad during meal times too, as a way to keep him seated and distracted enough to be fed during dinner. Dinnertime was challenging at first during the screen fast, but now he seems to be eating better and actually aware of what's going on during dinnertime, not lost in a screen. It's more a social experience now, as eating should be.The most incredible change has been his overall mood. I am simply without words to describe what an improvement he has had during the screen fast. After the first two weeks really it made a huge difference. Even his teachers were commenting on what a difference they were seeing at school, and we had not even shared with them that we were doing the screen fast. He became much more calm and happy and cooperative.I started writing down a daily log of our son's behavior just before we began the screen fast, and every day of the fast, just to record any progress made. As I look back now on my notes I am simply dumfounded. It's incredible to see the issues and behaviors we were dealing with and how quickly things turned around. I am still a bit in disbelief.Recently I went to a friend's house with my son. He played with my friend's daughter while the adults chatted. Never--not once- in his life have I been able to do that sort of thing without dealing with interruptions or meltdowns. We had become so accustomed to his moodiness and meltdowns, especially over the last year, that it's shocking now to see him be able to play happily with his friend and not get bored, not interrupt the adults, be friendly and sociable, and overall so much more easygoing.It seems so obvious now that it was the iPad stimuli causing our son's poor sleep and moodiness and meltdowns. But we certainly would not have made that realization without this book and doing the screen fast.I will recommend this book to every parent I can. I feel like overexposure to screens is such a widespread problem, especially when it comes to educational games. Well-meaning parents like myself think we are giving our children a leg up in our highly digitized world by providing them with educational digital media. We have all heard the dangers of too much passive TV, but the dangers of the educational electronic activities are certainly not as commonly known as they should be!As a parent who was all out of ideas and desperate to find solutions, this book helped our family tremendously and helped our son to reemerge as the sweet, kind, happy boy we knew him to be. It may have potentially also saved us from seeking out a medical diagnosis or medicating him for something unnecessarily.
