In Horn’s captivating history of NYC's Blackwell’s Island -- the predecessor of Rikers -- the best-laid plans of politicians, moralists, and both science- and quackery-minded reformers of prisons, orphanages, hospitals, and workhouses go awry from rehab to perdition. In just a few years. Then as now, NYC's dumping ground for criminals -- and victims seen as no better than criminals -- starved and sickened and corrupted and even drove insane the very people it was supposed to punish (inmates) and protect (patients and wards, even widows).Reading deeply into neglected public and private archives, and the frothy front-page news of many decades past, Horn sings the stories of villains, victims, and the rare hero. They show that neither lax bureaucracy nor deliberate vengefulness can be blamed for the worst cruelties toward the incarcerated. Then as now, the best ticket to the island of the judicially damned was not proof of a crime, but the burden of poverty.

This is a book with brains and heart. Stacy Horn has brought to life the lost history of New York City’s dumping ground where the insane, the poor, and the grossly unlucky were stashed out of sight. It’s a remarkable story, and a remarkable book that should become the standard text for any historian or reader interested in learning the awful truth of good intentions. Ms. Horn writes with great empathy and clarity to expose the harrowing tales of individuals -- society’s expendables -- who were caught up in the prejudice, revulsion, and deceit of “the authorities”.The stories are so sad, and so absurd, it’s hard to believe they can be real; but Ms. Horn is an expert researcher and storyteller and I’m glad that this history, and these people, will, thanks to her, never be forgotten.

Once again, Stacy shows us the truth is more horrific than fiction. Right under New Yorkers noses, as they toil through their regular daily routines, real horrors in New York are played out on a daily basis. How this can go on right under the noses of a whole city is mind boggling but it did here and other places as well in NYC.Another great read from Stacy Horn.

Excellent, excellent book. I've been wanting to read this book for a while. When it came down in price, I nabbed it, and I'm so glad I did. Whenever I hear people discuss how much better things were in the good old days...I will shove this book under their nose. New York was an awful place pretty much the entire 1800's. It was even worse for the poor, those with disabilities, the insane, and for women with any of these problems (more than men). Add to this the fact that no one understood that disease is caused by dirt, lack of food, and small organisms...you have a huge mess on your hands. I had read a lot about Blackwell Island other places, but this book gave you the whole dark story from beginning to end. The research for this book was phenomenal. I was amazed at the amount of information Horn was able to get for a place a couple of hundred years old. Names of people involved, the horrible commissioners, politicians, the clergymen, etc. really made this book come alive...and you realize how real all of this was. An explosive account of a horrible time!

This book was not only moving to me simply because I am an Irish second generation citizen and witnessed first hand the effects of Alcoholism. This book humbles and guides me to be a better social worker because oppression and suffering knows no color or boundaries so we need to embrace the new fall guys (immigrants) because at one time it either was or could of been you

Thought this was a fictional book based off of non-fiction (downloaded the sample based off the name alone). I cried at moments and was angered at many others. Well done Ms. Horn!

Author Stacy Horn brings conditions in the 19th century to life for her readers in her non-fiction work, Damnation Island. Readers are pulled in immediately by the anecdotal report of life for a poor, sick, and injured young man who, through neglect and starvation, is "cared for" by the alleged well-meaning men and women of 19th century charity homes. I had a difficult time putting this down, and wanted to keep reading this book. Stacy Horn does a wonderful job in stating the facts without allowing personal sentimentality to interfere with the storyline. Highly recommended reading.

This book is essential reading if you wish to understand how we got Riker's Island and Hart Island and why both places urgently need our attention. This is Mayor De Blasio's "tale of two cities." Yet, he is reluctant to make penal reform a priority in his administration. There is a long established tradition of looking the other way and ignoring human rights in New York City. This book is a thrill to read. It even references a recently exposed cistern on Hart Island.

YA'LL...THIS BOOK. I CAN'T.I'll be honest, I was not expecting to love this book as much as I did. I had a feeling that I would like it and it would be a fun ride, but it was so much more! Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller follows Captain Alosa Kalligan who is sent out on a mission by her father to be purposely kidnapped by the pirate crew, led by the cunning and ruthless Draxen, to recover a legendary hidden map leading to a magical island full of happiness and treasure. If you are looking for a fantasy that is entertaining and action-packed -- Daughter of the Pirate King is for you. Besides having an amazing main character, my favorite part of the book is the witty and sarcastically hilarious dialogue between the cast of characters, especially between Alosa and Riden, first mate and brother of Draxen. I'm a sucker for hate-to-love tropes and this one hits the nail on the head with it. The chemistry is perfect but the tension...oh my.I'm not sure how much I can describe how ridiculously awesome Alosa as a main character besides saying that I simply want to BE her. I love reading about feisty, in-charge women and Alosa was everything I could have asked for and more when it comes to empowering females. She is confident and smart and FIERCE. Ya'll think Celaena is the master of assassinating? Psh, she wouldn't stand a chance against Alosa were they to fight. DON'T @ ME. Also, the whole description of her being a female Jack Sparrow is completely false. SHE'S BETTER.Besides the fact that I'm obviously obsessed with the characters of the novel, can we talk about the writing for a second? Levenseller is so fluid with the dialogue but also the flow of the story was just so smooth. She is so sneaky when it comes to revealing plot twists. She tells you plain as day while you're reading but when it comes to the reveal, you act like a complete fool for not seeing it before. I don't know about you but I personally love that about novels. I love it when the author is constantly keeping me on my toes because it always make me want to come back for more.I could honestly keep going on and on about how in love I am with this book, but you need to find out for yourself. If it wasn't obvious before, I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who loves fast-paced, quick wit, packed with feisty and cute pirates, then PICK THIS UP.5 starsI mean..who didn't see that coming?

So, I've been DYING to read a book about pirates and sirens. As soon as I saw this book, I knew I had to get my hands on it, even with some of the negative reviews. Honestly, nothing struck me as being awful about this book at all. In fact, after the first few chapters, I really fell this book.Alosa is a girl I could definitely relate with - personality wise that is. She is fiery and always ready and willing to prove herself. She has the right amount of morals that make her a desirable character but not any less believable as a pirate. Crafty, spunky, and full of fire, Alosa is a character that is easy to adore.Riden pulled me immediately. The fact that he stood his own with her, was crafty in his own subtle ways, and loyal to a fault - it's hard not to like him. Even when things that he is doing don't quite add up. Even when you scream for him to choose. My feelings didn't falter, because I couldn't blame him with the position he was in. Tricia did an excellent job with conveying this dilemma and making it understandable. The fact that this story started off in the middle of action reeled me in immediately. I love the the buildup between characters in this book. The test of deciding where to place your loyalty. TRUE PIRATEDOM!The overall story was very well done. I literally sat down in the morning and finished late afternoon. I could not put this book down! This was a fun and fast read and it was just what I needed! I thoroughly look forward to reading the next book in this duology.

Well, I can say I’m absolutely surprised. I did not have any luck with YA fantasies so far. I mean, okay, I’ve read a few ok ones, but I’ve never felt the surge to add them to my list of favorite books. But DotPK changed the way I’m looking at this genre from now. As much as I had a difficult time getting into the story, it quickly gained my full attention and I read it in one sitting.I loved the easy way the story was flowing. It was like I’ve been sitting on the Night Farer with Alosa. Why the hell we don’t have more pirate stories? I totally dig this whole pirate thing.I really liked that this book doesn’t have the annoying melodrama and love triangle section. Levenseller did an amazing job creating a dark, yet somehow bright atmosphere and I think it was the perfect way to lead this story. What I totally adored was Alosa’s absolute cockiness. This girl is something else! At first, she may seem a bit of an extra, but as the story unfolds, you can’t help but fall for her.
And Riden! Damn, he’s fine! I may be a cougar, but I need him for myself!Gosh, I can’t wait to read the sequel! Luckily, I already have it on my shelf!
