Here is the inside story of one of our most important government services, a history of an organization known to millions of people around the globe but to only a handful of Americans. Heil's book celebrates this nation's dedication to the practical application of its democratic foundations―our freedom of speech and press. (Walter Cronkite)Voice of America: A History, the first comprehensive history of hte VOA since the mid-1980s,... is a valuable account that deserve a wide readership, both within the Foreign Service and among the general public. (Steven Alan Honley Foreign Service Journal)For those wondering why, in the presence of global commercial news networks, there is still a need for the Voice of America.... Heil's comprehensive history of America's largest publicly funded overseas broadcasting network surely provides a most comprehensive answer. (The Economist)[Heil's] familiarity with both the nitty-gritty and the larger issues surrounding "the Voice," as the VOA is commonly known, does much to make the story come alive, as do the anecdotes and transcripts of radio broadcasts he intersperses throughout the narrative... this is a valuable account that deserves a wide readership. (Foreign Service Journal)Voice of America: A History effectively chronicles an important corner of American cultural history. (Seattle Times/Post Intelligencer)Heil's book is a must read for anyone who is interested in enhancing America's standing in the world. (Walter R. Roberts Mediterranean Quarterly)Heil, who spent 36 years at the Voice, was uniquely placed to writeVoice of America: A History, a comprehensive and captivating insight... stretching from the launch of the service in February 1942 to its 60th anniversary. (Morand Fachot DIFFUSION online)Anyone looking for a richer understanding of recent international information activities will find this work worthwhile. (Laura A. Belmont Register of the Kentucky Historical Society)The breadth and scope of this book mean it is essential reading for all those involved--or with an interest--in public diplomacy, international affairs and the media. Upon receiving the book i was astonished by the size of the publication, and thought to myself how and what could possibly fill such a tome. However once i started reading i could see the reason for such a large book.Starting off with the Tianamen Square episode and then proceeding through the history of VOA,and various other consequences in history the stories are well told in great detail.I found this book to be an excellent record of what VOA really stands for in the world outside of USA.To the rest of the world the book carries the message of reliability and truthfulness. This book truly is America,it truly is the Voice Of America. It is both a history and historical record of America. There are a few photographs included portraying some of the key people and places, but this does not detract from the main purpose of the prose contained within.

Alan Heil has given us the story of the Voice of America, the US Government's international radio stations, from the perspective of one of its longest-serving employees. Mr. Heil started with VOA in New York, and moved with them to Washington, DC in the 1950s. He tells the stories of the broadcasters and broadcasts as only someone on the inside can. This is a must read for anyone interested in International Broadcasting or American policy.

We are using Voice of America A History to assist us in producing a Broadway musical ("voice") created byPaxton Farrar (student at NYU and playwright). Though the musical is staged in the late 40's all of theinformation about VOA for the decades discussed in Heil's book was tremendously useful in understandingthe dedication to the Charter and to journalistic truth. Voice of America is as important to listenersall of over the world today as it was to the post WWII years. Alan Heil did an incredible job ofcapturing the life stories of those involved with VOA and those dependent on it for truth aboutthe value of people and their quest for freedom. Bravo!

Alan Heil has written a highly-readable book with excellent documentation. His keen insight into origin and development of the Voice of America was reflected in his writing -- and his numerous examples of VOA's impact upon foreign audiences was compelling. His front-row seat to the continuing challenges to VOA independence (and its integrity) make this a "must read" for any student of international communication and public diplomacy. Readers may not like the conclusions at the end of the book, but -- like the Voice itself over most of its years -- they are credible and "straight."

This book is very enjoyable reading. It's like a memoir or autobiography of Voice of America, definitely not a stuffy academic work.

it's a good book, especially for someone that really need an information about the history of the voice of america.

About the Author

Caldecott medalist Ed Young was born in Tientsin, China, and brought up in Shanghai. He cites the philosophy of Chinese painting as an inspiration for much of his work. "A Chinese painting is often accompanied by words," he explains; "they are complementary. There are things that words do that pictures never can, and likewise, there are images that words can never describe."Mr. Young has been illustrating children's books for more than twenty years and has won many awards. He received the 1990 Caldecott Medal for his book Lon Po Po, and his much-lauded collaboration with anthologist Nancy Larrick, Cats Are Cats, was named one of the Ten Best Illustrated Books of 1988 by The New York Times.Mr. Young studied at the University of Illinois, the Art Center of Los Angeles, and Pratt Institute in New York City. Purchased for my classroom. Students pick it up because it appears to be an easy picture book. Even those, whose teachers read it to them in elementary school, struggle with it on their own.The illustrations are lovely. The writing is beautiful. Review it and know your learner before you offer it to them as a reading option.

Got this for my son's fifth birthday a few weeks ago. It is a lovely version of the Little Red Riding Hood story from China. We love books that give our son a window into other cultures. He is a huge fan of wolf stories (Three Little Pigs, Wolves in the Walls) and ADORES this. However, if your child scares easily, you might think carefully, because it is a little dark, both in the color palette of the beautiful illustrations and the scary wolf who talks his way into the cottage. Also, the three girls names are Chinese and not the easiest to pronounce unless you have some familiarity with Chinese, so a pronunciation guide would have been kind, but even if you get the names wrong, a kid won't know and will love it!

Wish it was a Hard cover but no tears, no writing, great for the price.

Great twist on Little Red Riding Hood.

Love the Chinese perspective the classic folklore tale.

Great story with beautiful illustrations to share with our kids. We like sharing different versions of stories. One problem with the printing: the whole story is printed twice in our copy (copyright page and all). Doesn't change a thing, but just strange.

A confirmation to girls that they have power. Three little girls save the day through using their own brain power against a formidable foe. No woodsman to come in a save the girls, they do it on their own.

This is a beautifully told and illustrated Red-Riding-Hood type story from China. In it, a mother leaves her three daughters alone while she goes to visit her own mother, their grandmother, Po Po. The mother tells the daughters to open to the door to no one. But a nearby wolf overhears this and after the mother is gone he knocks on the door, pretending to be Po Po. The children question him, why is he here when their mother is there, and so on, but the clever wolf, like all liars and deceivers, has an answer for everything. The two youngest children open the door to the wolf, who quickly blows out the candle so they cannot see him.Lying in bed with the wolf, the oldest daughter feels his fur and tail and realizes that he is a wolf. So she asks him if he has ever eaten the sweetest, most wonderful food in the world, the gingko nut. The wolf hasn't, but he can't climb the tree to get the nuts. The three children offer to climb the tree for him. He agrees. Once safely up in the tree, the children continue to deceive the wolf until, finally, they overcome him. The cleverness of the wrong-doer versus the cleverness of the innocent -- a bit slow in spots, but very good.
