Being able to consistently score in the 1550s on practice SAT's, I hoped to use the plentiful practice materials offered in this book to further familiarize myself with SAT-style tests and hopefully improve upon my score. This book, however, proved to be a disappointment, as questions in every section appear to be different in style than the ones on the actual SAT. Compared to the Official College Board SAT Guide, some of the practice tests in this book are much more simple, whereas some are substantially more difficult. The Math question types fail to encompass the full variety of topics presented on the real exam. I have the same complaint about the Writing Section, which seemed to be oddly simple at times, with a few instances of abstract, ridiculous questions (most of which I had never seen before on the multitude of College Board SAT's I had previously taken). The reading section, however, merits both praise and critique. Passages, in general, represent those on the real exam (you get some scientific literature, historical documents, 19th-century British novels, etc.). The disadvantages, however, manifest in the questions themselves. It is difficult to clearly expound upon the subtleties in the differences between questions in this book and that of the real exam, but the general problem types and phrasing of the questions differ considerably. Since my primary goal in purchasing this book was to gain an increased understanding of the SAT question types (since familiarity yields expediency), the inaccurate format of the book significantly undermined my goal. At the end of the day, I felt that my $15 had been squandered. I will continue to look for practice materials since Princeton Review is too inaccurate to help much; I learned my mistake the hard way, I hope you do not.Edit: Unbelievable. I had carefully perused the reviews before purchasing this book, and cannot believe that something like this has gone unnoticed. !!!The math section practice problems in the book EXACTLY MIRROR those of the math section in the Official SAT Study Guide from the College Board!!! This held true for four of the practice tests in Princeton Review that I had taken. I noticed the similarity when reading the questions, and upon comparing them side by side to the Official SAT Study Guide, I found that they are IDENTICAL in format. Some appear to be literally copy pasted from the College Board book, others have minor modifications: a question along the lines of "Eddie biked for 5 hours at 20 mph, find the distance traveled" would be changed to "Bob hiked for 6 hours at 25 mph, find the distance traveled", and so on. I was extremely disappointed that Princeton Review attempted to take the easy way out by copying questions directly from College Board. Since I highly doubt that I will gain much from doing the same questions over and over, the math practice in this book has virtually been rendered useless."Too long, didn't read" version: If you have the Official College Board SAT Study Guide, do not bother buying this book. The math questions are basically exactly identical. If you had already taken the Official SAT Practice Tests, these won't help at all (except maybe boost your confidence with inaccurately​ high scores on the Math Section, since the questions are the EXACT SAME). I am extremely disconcerted that Princeton Review had done this. They had always been my favorite resource for standardized tests, whether it was AP's, Subject Tests, or the PSAT. This, in my eyes, is a substantial blow to their credibility and reputation.

If you bought the 2017 edition before like me, don't buy this book. The 2018 edition is not actually a new book; it is actually just the 2017 edition's 6 practice tests with 3 new practice tests added.

Anybody who says that this book's Practice Tests are not similar to the actual test has not downloaded the official CollegeBoard Practice Tests. The problems are very similar. The great thing about this book is that you can get a quality preparation when you run out of CollegeBoard Practice Tests. The book does not contain any garbage material, it consists only of Practice Tests. All of my friends who have taken the actual test approve this book, saying that it is very similar to the real SAT. Please do not review good books negatively, because of the errors, show me an SAT book that does not contain any errors, I assure you you will have real difficulties finding such book, since these publishers try to publish a new book in a very short period of time. About the similarity of the practice tests, Come on! Every single book is like this! Just take McGraw Hill's 2010 and 2014 as an example, the same problems, almost every single thing stayed the same. McGraw Hill's 2017 and 2018 are almost identical. This does not mean that the books are not good.

Do not buy this book, there are various other SAT prep books that you could buy that are extremely more helpful and would guarantee a boost in your SAT score. However, this book differs from the actual SAT substantially in its phrasing of questions and style. It is not a reliable source to practice with (especially in reading and writing.)

Many mistakes-- at least one per section on every single test. How did that pass editing and proofreading? Fix it, and the rating would go up. A little harder than the actual SAT, but questions are good and will prepare a student... if they fix the wrong answers and mistakes.

They've added 3 additional tests to the original 6 from their previous book.

Great and thorough study guide for the SAT. My daughter has been using this with her SAT tutor, and it has definitely helped improve her confidence.

This book provides reliable SAT practice and helped me get used to the newer format of the exam as the SAT made the transition from the 2400 version to the new 1600 version.

Should be required reading in college or for any educated person as it highlights the "lost history" of the Golden Age of Islam around a thousand years ago when the House of Wisdom in Baghdad was an early think tank, pulling together and preserving knowledge from India to Greece and sharing brainpower among scientists and intellectuals adding its own substantial advances in math, astronomy, medicine, geography, etc. a long period spanning centuries that is too important to be forgotten.

Learned soooo much from this book, a very easy read!

Wonderful book! I enjoyed the fictional stories at the beginning of each chapter, connectingthe present to past. As the author makes clear in the introduction, there are several schools of thought regarding the Islamic civilization, past and present status, and his goal is not to take a position in such debates, but "to adhere to established fact but bring the most important characters and events to life".

Love the historic bits; not so crazy about the modern stories. But for an inexpensive student introduction to the topic it can't be beat.

Very well written and easily accessible. Walks through a great deal of history. Author organizes, empires, innovations and chronology beautifully to make it understandable and interesting

I absolutely love this book. The way the writer includes modern day situations into the story and flows right into the history of the subject being discussed....absolutely amazing. Ive been muslim almost 4 years and Ive read John L. Esposito's 900 pg. book on Islamic history but this book still informed me of subjects and people that I had no idea about. This book is good for all levels of readers and hopefully gives you inspiration and pride that it gave me. This book could do alot for dawah as well to show non-muslims the peace and harmony that used to exist in a multi-religious community. It would also be a good tool to remind modern society of the contributions muslims and Islam gave us.

My main purpose to reading this book was to understand the flow of Knowledge over centuries from one culture to another. I obviously knew that Greek, Persian, Indian, Chinese, and Egyptian were the old civilizations and places of learning and knowledge. I also knew that from about 1500 it was the Europeans who due to the progression of their civilization took the mantle. I wanted to know what happened in between. The book does a great job answering this question.

The West and the world owe the Islamic world much: in medicine, ethics, metaphysics, mathematics, astronomy, poetry, architecture, literature and music Islam has had a profound influence. Just how deep the connections are, and how great the debt owed is the basis for Morgan's book.After presenting a brief history of the first centuries of Islam, the richness, depth, breadth and variety of Islamic thought is presented, convincingly arguing that Muslim philosophers and scientists are inheiritors of the Greco-Roman world as much (if not more than) Europe, and that these thinkers pushed intellectual boundaries to the benefit of everyone. These details make the book, as the connections between 9th and 10th century Islam and the present are profound.However, Morgan has a tendency to dramatize and personify history, which I though detracted from the effectiveness of his point. To write about the internal thoughts of ibn Sina would be fine for fiction, but have no place in a historical text. Similarly, in an effort to make the connections between past and present clearer, each chapter begins with a character in the present reflecting on or wrestling with the legacy of the Islamic past. Because of this, I almost gave it three stars - but the importance and impact of the Islamic past is so important and relevant that I forgave him a star.With this historical caveat, it is a remarkable read, and one that I highly recommend.

This book has a slow, steady pace. While I enjoyed the story, I can see how it might be a turn off for those who aren’t expecting it. With that being said, the story itself is a combo of fantasy mixed with real world authenticity- magic, witches, clairvoyant, New Orleans life style, young lovers, old lovers, betrayal, mystery, and more! The details are phenomenal. It has a darker tone and a certain creep factor to it (it’s a good thing).The only problem I had with the book was the many characters. Perhaps it’s because I listened to the audio book vs. reading? I plan to listen to the story again as I know I missed some things in the beginning- the book is full of details, big and small, so pay attention. The story is told through the different viewpoints of the characters. The narrator for the audio book was great- easy to listen to voice.This series has a more serious tone than his Witching Savannah series, so if you’re looking for something similar to that, you might be disappointed. This is not a book for the kiddos or faint of heart- contains violence and death.I will be reading/listening to the next book in the series as this series is full of potential that I hope will unfold in the second book. I would recommend this book if you are into dark fantasy.

I am unsure of my feelings for The King of Bones and Ashes, the first book in the Witches of New Orleans series. While the storytelling is fantastic and the writing is awesome, I felt like I chased the climax and then the ending of this story.It reads very slow.It’s not just the first five or six chapters either. It didn’t start to pick up for me until halfway through. This book almost lost me so many times.Don’t get me wrong. J.D. Horn lays out the foundation for this series very well and he’s thorough in his telling. The characters were great, though there are many. There are lots of moving parts to this story with a lot of depth. Without any doubt, the author captures them wonderfully.The pace was just not for me.People who have the patience will really enjoy this story. There is plenty of it.I am undecided if I will move onto the second book of this series or not.

Really liked this story and am looking forward to the sequel. The description is a bit misleading, the POV is not just Alice, but her eldest brother's girlfriend and the daughter of her grandmother's best friend. Alice important but there's a lot more going on. After the prologue, the story starts a little slow, but I think that's to be expected with Gothic stories- it lays the groundwork so the reader can understand how everyone ties to one another. Horn drops enough tidbits to keep you really invested as the action ramps up. My only complaint is the climax was very short. As if in the middle of battle the director yelled CUT! and everyone wandered away. A few loose ends were tied up, but ultimately it is a cliff hanger. Personally, I'd recommend waiting until the sequel is available before starting this book. After the last page the Marin witches & Co. stay with you and you will definitely be wanting more!

I often like stories that deal with magic, witchcraft, psychic phenomena, madness, clairvoyants, etc., and this novel had it all. The setting is post-hurricane Katrina New Orleans (don't say "Nawlins" as we're reminded at one point) and the essence of the hurricane pervades the story, reminding us that the spirit of a natural disaster affects the real world (however you define it) and the spirit world (again, however you define it). There's a large cast of characters, which can lead to confusion, but there's a list of characters at the end of the story which I wish had been in the beginning. Enjoy, but prepare to be spooked!

People who enjoyed The Line/The Source/The Void will enjoy this more grown-up if less frisky version. Steeped in the old southern charms that prominently include voodoo and magic, this is more preparation for a larger story peppered with new characters and backstories to learn (or that you think you learn) than it is a novel on it's own, but while occasionally gruesome and occasionally disappointing (some of the abrupt deaths made me sad for the stories we didn't discover) but this ultimately feels like an author warming up to tell a larger story. Hopefully that's the case and the subsequent volumes get to revel a bit in this newly created old world. I was sadly disappointed in Shivaree but Horn rather redeemed himself with Jilo... so I'll be around for the next volume he puts out.

If you are buying this because you liked the witching savannah series, this is very different. it is written very well, a fascinating plot line and interesting characters--but for me it was just too heavy and dark. There was no fun or liveliness in it like the witching savannah series. It also was a little too convoluted, such that i had a hard time remembering who was who and what their relation was to the whole plot. Some people may really like this--it is some ways a good book. but for me it just was not something i wanted to pick back up and read. i would not order the next book in the series.

Try as I might, I still can't figure out what I just read. Too many intertwined characters, an odd sense of chronology, and more loose ends than a frayed rug left me unsure how this book ended. I re-read sections assuming I missed key pieces but admit I failed to comprehend whatever story the author intended. The writing style is choppy and switches perspective too often. I would not recommend this book.

THE KING OF BONES AND ASHES is a sublime novel that will draw you in and keep you turning pages long into the night. J.D. Horn has tapped a vein of pure joy with this book, and I can't wait to read the next one.
