I have few, if any, problems with the writing in this guidebook. Lesley King does a fine job giving information about restaurants, hotels, and sights. My problem is with the layout. As usual, Frommers promises "detailed maps throughout," but in this regard their information was sorely lacking.Let's look at Albuquerque. Perhaps not the best walking city, for sure, but why no map of Old Town? Or downtown? Wouldn't that be more useful than the ridiculously scaled-out (1 centimenter = 1.5 miles) maps of food/accommodations we're given? These maps are so zoomed out as to be practically useless, especially once one arrives in the city. After all, how much good is a map of the hotels going to do when you're on the ground?Santa Fe is a little better, particularly in the walking tour area, but there isn't one at all for Los Alamos. Which wouldn't be a problem since it's a small town, except they give the address of places in the city as "15th street and Central Ave," which would be a lot more useful with a map to contextualize it. And that brings me to my next point -- why don't they always give an address? In this day of GPS devices, it makes a lot of sense to do so. And yet for some destinations (most, I will grant) they do, but for others they do not.I spent 2.5 days in New Mexico and had a blast, but this guidebook gave me a lot of frustration. Between its glaring deficiencies in maps and curious omission of some addresses, it made getting around much more of a chore than it needed to be. So while I have not seen any competitors' guidebooks, I cannot fully endorse this one.

The ProductThis guide was definitely helpful and easy to use. It really covered my needs, though I was on a very quick 6-day mini-tour of Taos, Santa Fe and Albuquerque. I felt the author had a stronger voice than other guides I've read. This gave it a more personal feel at times but also made me wonder what was left out or emphasized due to her (I'm pretty sure it was a woman) personal tastes. I didn't dislike her tastes for the most part, it's just that I usually want a slightly more objective/comprehensive voice so that I can select things according to my tastes.I left the book with my friend in Albuquerque as I actually thought she could get great use out of it.AmazonI have Amazon Prime and it's amazing. Also, Amazon is just a great retailer (not just against other online retailers, but against both online and traditional bricks-and-mortar stores as well). They make it easy to research as you buy, often suggesting other products that may be a better fit for your needs. In this case, I usually would have gone with my default guide of Lonely Planet. I tried this Frommer's guide because it was more recent. Sometimes things change quickly and given the recession, I wanted to be sure my expectations were in line with reality to the extent possible. So thanks Amazon.

For the most part this was a handy guide and I believe it would have been more useful had I had ordered it earlier so I could have done more research. Although Santa Fe is a Mecca for many tourists there aren't many guidebooks, at least in my local bookstore, so I was very happy to find this. This guide doesn't list as many of the places to stay that are close to the plaza, however, as there actually are. you may want to look online for a good deal and do some research as to the proximity of what you are wanting to see. We stayed in a B&B that was great, and very near the plaza but not listed in this guide.The best thing was the restaurants that were listed and their addresses as well as the museums.This way we could put them into our smartphones and go directly there without getting lost.

I used this book for almost everything we did in Santa Fe and Taos. It was complete with excellent detail and a wide range of information. I liked it much better than the Foder's Guide, which I barely used.

This is going to help me find interesting places on my 1 week respite in July. I live in Colorado so this will be very useful.

Great guide while visiting NM last year. Kept us from digging around trying to find things and places while visiting Santa Fe. Enjoyable trip.

The book is very well-written. It provides a great overview of the area and the history. I only visited Santa Fe, so I can't comment on the info about the other two cities. The info for Santa Fe hotels and restaurants was very detailed and accurate. I highly recommend Frommer's travel guides in general.

One endorsement of The Boy Crisis claims that is “the most important book of the 21st century.” I would amend that to “most necessary book.” Encyclopedic as it feels–almost 500 pages–it could have been four or five books, given the wealth and variety of its topics. While aimed at parents, particularly fathers, as they assist struggling young men to find healthy purpose and true male success in life, reading it causes me to reflect on my life as a man. For some women it may be a tough read, given that it incisively challenges many of the near dogmatic assumptions of what is wrong with men by offering well-researched alternative perspectives.There are two distortions in the male narrative that challenge us, the distant or absent dad in contemporary societies and the anachronistic sacrificial disposability of men in the gender meta-narrative. Both need be questioned and countered. Farrell and Gray do exactly that.From the fathering perspective, the demands of work life and familial support all but eliminate meaningful presence in parenting for many men, while divorce, on the increase as women find self-sufficiency, may exclude them entirely.When it comes to real combat, men don’t count, except for a few heroes, living or dead, who sanctify the sacrificial offerings of the rest. Daily news reports from war zones count women and children dead and mutilated, leaving men to lie among the numberless casualties or be identified the bad guys who killed them. In popular media the killing of men is part of everyday entertainment and causes little concern. “The traditional male hero is about self-sacrifice, not self-actualization.” The battlefield and the workplace often function alike in this respect.Though the women’s movement is rightfully empowering women to resist abuse and find rewarding and satisfying roles in life, there is little effort to allow men to follow “the glint in their eye”, to evade or redefine the stock, stereotypical roles of protector and provider. It is time for men to say their own, “Me too.” One hopes that the coming generation, now seemingly destined as micro-entrepreneurs, will have greater freedom to do so, but a new outcome does not depend solely on messing with the constraints of capitalism and commodification, but also on redefining the traditional male sense of purpose and adopting a life style that flows from it and supports it.The book is replete with parental insights and suggested practices that begin to provide for this shift to a broader sense of purpose. This should not echo the veterinary sense of “fixing” men, but is about opening paths of opportunity for richer, more satisfying and, yes, heroic roles in male creativity, relationship formation and parenting. A good part of this is identifying and countering the “social bribes”, the pay-offs which deviate men from discovering their richer purpose offering a false currency of acknowledgement for outdated and too often tragic role performances.Almost the last third of the book is focused on mental health issues most specifically on ADHD and its causes, effects and alternative remedies. I was hoping for OCD as well but was disappointed in this respect. Much wants more.The pages are extremely well written, often with memorable lines in bold print. A few examples:• “Time trumps dime” – valuing a father’s time with family, not just his earnings.• We are inclined to “Save the whales but not save the males.”• The shifting economy, “from muscle to microchip.”The endnotes are abundant and supportive of the content, which will no doubt be contested as it frequently contradicts commonly accepted assumptions about men, their behavior and their highly touted privilege.In sum, thanks guys!

Just got The Boy Crisis today and while I have not yet read the whole thing I am very moved by what I have read so far. Warren Farrell has been researching and studying the struggle facing boys for decades and is able to offer a perspective on their plight perhaps like no other. I predict this book will kick off a new movement. Or at least a very important cultural conversation about how we as a nation are supporting, or in so many ways not supporting, our boys.This book, I should add, is not saying that girl’s issues aren’t real or don’t matter. Not at all. Rather, it takes the perspective that for society to be healthy both boys and girls need support and love and positive views of themselves. I couldn’t agree more.

My dad was in the invasion of Okinawa on Easter Sunday April 1st 1945 and returned from war with what they called shell shock. His father served in WWI and defending the country was an honor to both.In my dad's early to mid-career as a pipeline electrician, he had debilitating panic attacks, smoked, became alcoholic, had un-anesthetized shock treatments, and was prescribed Librium and other drugs. Not an easy home-life for any of us but in his devotion to living by the code, he stayed until he retired.Dad quit drinking in the via the recovery movement, and quit smoking, too. Mom, although not alcoholic, followed his lead. My dad died fairly recently at 90. Boy Crisis put the missing pieces together for me. Not only in relationship to my dad, but my brother, uncles, cousins, husband, stepson, and grandson.As a C-suite consultant for 18 years in the gas and oil industry, I've seen the emotional scars and I’ve heard the Great Santini stories. And, I know engineers who could have been professional musicians and financial executives who are better suited for teaching or counseling.Women's Movement gave me an energetic boost. I'm grateful. I've had many opportunities. As a result, my desire is to be able to see my 7 year-old grandson entering his working years buoyed with a culture change that Farrell and Gray believe is possible.If you are a dad or have a dad, you will find treasure between the pages in Boy Crisis. I want to do my part and spread the word about. So far, I've ordered 12 hard cover books and an Audible version. I suspect I'll order more.

Mind-blowing. I have 5 daughters ages 15-27 who are amazing and healthy and happy. I just had a son 6 months ago! Bought this book after hearing the author on the radio....can’t recommend this highly enough. Whatever your political views or economic status or geographical location, we are all united by the desire as parents for happiness and health for all children. The book hits you between the eyes that this is a NATIONAL CRISIS WE ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR, and even better - supplies tools with which to work on this critical issue.

I Will Be Complete is a heartbreaking memoir that begins with a vivid picture of nineteen-seventies L.A. and San Francisco, when some of the sixties' blooming hippie flowers rotted into narcissistic hedonists and con-artists. The effect of self-absorbed parents, and a self-destructive mother on a sensitive, precocious, and occasionally obnoxious young boy is conveyed in compact multi-paragraph vignettes that end with a twist of sadness to land home the authors' injuries.This is a hard-won book that Glen describes struggling with for the last twenty years or so. I loved the first half of the book that charts Glen's path from a sad, lonely rich kid; to an abandoned, scared pre-teen; to a boarding-school boy who wins over his mates with street-smart San Francisco tricks like buying his nemesis' soul for the price of a comic book.The rest of the book charts Glen's love life and creative struggles as a writing student at U.C.'s Berkeley and Irvine — an early version of his boyhood story ran to 7000 pages before being abandoned. The pictures Glen paints of love, longing, and connections both magical and impossible, are vivid, sexy, compelling, and embarrassing. This material is by nature self-indulgent, and it takes courage to tell the painful stories that most of us want to bury from our youth, with the insights of middle-age. I'm glad he wrote this book now and not twenty years ago.Unless you have a dark heart, you'll feel a level of compassion for Glen that I haven't felt since Jeanette Walls' The Glass Castle. This is a memoir of historical, emotional, and psychological import.

Glen David Gold’s memoir I WILL BE COMPLETE is a painstaking look at a young boy whose parents are not equipped to be parents and when their lives implode, the tough get going, leaving their not-yet-teenage son to fend for himself. This doesn’t seem possible, but it happened. Young Glen, growing up in the 60s, fled from his once luxurious life in southern California into the irresponsible life of his mother’s friends in San Francisco where the tough got going. Because he had no choice. For the rest of his young life, from middle school to high school to college, he bounced back and forth from wherever his mother landed, which was around the map, as her decline set in.How he managed to keep himself afloat during his childhood is hard to believe at times. Abandoned by his mother and as much by his father who moved to another state and eventually married again and started a new family.With dreams since he was young to become a writer, he struggled with this as well, but never gave up. Eventually pursuing what he wanted to do, with an education to match. Gold’s is a wild story, amazing that he survived. But survived he did and his book with vivid stories is proof.

To use the author's own words, Glen Gold's memoir is a life 'exquisitely described'. It's a difficult book to review without ruining the experience of what's to come for a new reader given the almost brutal level of honesty and candidness with which he writes. Upon first read, there are moments of absolute shock at what is being shared. But, it's fair to say Gold delves into the deepest recesses of anyone's most private and fragile relationships - parents, first loves, etc. And, while certainly attacking 'big' personal connections and moments, Gold also presents the small and the mundane - the secrets we tell only ourselves because it’s too embarrassing to do otherwise. They’re here, too. All in all, he leaves no stone unturned...including sharing with the reader when he may have gotten his memory wrong. It's a mesmerizing piece of work that is difficult to put down...and may redefine the word 'memoir' for you.

I Will Be Complete is a well written memoire that I had trouble putting down. Glen Gold's vivid description of San Francisco in the 70's gave me a sense of what it felt like to live in the city at that time. Glen's memoire is filled with intriguing characters, detailed storytelling, and his classic dry humor. Gold's description of his relationship with his mother and the men in her life and how it impacted his own quest for love is fascinating. I Will Be Complete is a must read and the best book I've read in several years.

While reading this book leads to many "I can't believe his mother/father did that" moments; it is the portrayal of the mother/son relationship that leaves a lasting impression -- on the reader and Gold. His romantic relationships are clearly filtered through the hurt, pain and love of his relationship with his mother as is the way he views the world slightly askew. However, it is Gold's ability to weave all of this into a fascinating, moving memoir. It is a book that deserves to be read twice.

Gold's memoir pulled me into his world and I felt like I was on the roller coaster of his life right along with him. It was fascinating, horrifying, redeeming and addictive. The writing really captured me. There were paragraphs I had to read and re-read to make sure I savored the words. I also loved his ability to make fun of himself for cringe-worthy moments (dangly skeleton earrings, anyone?) which we've all had. It's a very entertaining read.

I read this fast, because it was painful and because it wasn’t Karl Ove. I am glad I read it and can see the comparison with The Glass Castle, but for me the shape of the comparison outlines that “ men are awful and women are a mess “Was there ever a punchline to all the sightings of doppelgängers ? Is it that scary men are all alike? Memoir as the illustrated version of Lundy Bancroft’s “ Why does he do that? Inside the minds of angry and controlling men”?which, In part, blames mom too.

Fantastic. Just fantastic. Got it on my Kindle but will need a hard copy to own and share with as many people as I can. Moments of just pure...just pure self-reflection, as muddled as that can be, is I guess how I would describe it.
