This book finds the Inspector and his wife Jane on a holiday. The crooks don't stand a chance. I love the Inspector de Silva Mysteries. They are not gory and will not keep you awake at night unless you are trying to finish. Well done
A new Nuala/Inspector de Silva mystery is a welcome pleasure and this #6 installment of the series is the best to date. Each mystery has combined an exotic (at least to an American) locale, an interesting time period between the two World Wars, a set of multi-cultural protagonists, and a puzzle that can indeed be "solved" by the reader from the story itself. Particularly appealing is the character of Inspector de Silva, a brave and thoughtful and nuanced individual with his own pleasures and pursuits. I particularly look forward to the Inspector's self-reflection as he carefully considers the best ways to gain the cooperation and support of his British superiors. Each installment in this series also reflects on the British "Empire" and its Impact on the areas that came under British governance as well as on the Inspector's understanding that the world is very far from "equal" and how this influences his judgments in the hope of justice. I hope Mrs. Steel will continue with this series in much the same vein as in the past as the story's timeline moves ever closer to the years of WWII.
I have read this series and appreciate the tightrope this society walks as members of different levels of world cultures co exist in Ceylon of the 1930s. It is revealed in the nuances of polite conversations and action between the characters in this series. The characters themselves are endearingly patient within their own framework of position and purpose. Well written and correctly edited it is a pleasurable read as we solve this mystery with Hindu DiSilva and his Enlish wife Jane.
I love the characters in these books. Shanti the policeman loves his wife Jane very much. She reads alot of crime novels and gives him good ideas for solving his cases, even while on a cruise to see the pyramids!
