About the Author
Christopher Simon Sykes grew up at Sledmere, and went on to become a journalist, photographer and writer. His work has appeared in ‘Vogue’, ‘House & Garden’, the ‘Sunday Telegraph’ magazine and ‘Architectural Digest’ amongst others, and he wrote and presented ‘Upper Crust’, a six-part series on country house cookery for BBC Two. He has written six and photographed fourteen books, including ‘The National Trust Country House Album’, ‘The Rolling Stones on Tour’ and ‘The Garden at Buckingham Palace’. Christopher Simon Sykes is married with two children and lives in North London.

Do you remember the Sykes-Picot agreement from high school history? Vaguely, right? Something about the end of WWI ? But who was Sykes? Why did he get top billing, even if Picot comes first alphabetically? In his book The Man Who Created the Middle East, Christopher Sykes, grandson of Sykes-Picot fame, gives us those answers.Roughly two-thirds of the book concerns Sykes’ life before he became the Henry Kissinger of his times. Not to give away the backstory, but as a young man, Sykes help mediate his parents very scandalous divorce. One can speculate that the experience of mediating his parents’ divorce helped him acquire the diplomatic skills he would need later on. He gained further experience helping to find a middle ground in the "Irish Question" -- no easy task.The Man Who Created The Middle East is an entertaining and straightfoward read. Mark Sykes lead an interesting life before putting his name on the famous agreement. However, without his imprimatur on the agreement, he would have been a minor political figure in the early 20th Century, someone not usually worthy of a biography meant for general readership. However, with his significant place in history and his grandson’s straightforward writing, the biography of his life can be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in modern history. The Man Who Created The Middle East deserves a five star rating
